What is KORD, and what should pilots know about O’Hare?

KORD is the ICAO identifier for Chicago O’Hare International Airport in Illinois. Pilots should expect Class B airspace, eight runways—including six east–west parallels—frequent runway and frequency changes, long taxi routes and strict hold-short readbacks. Use a current airport diagram; an outdated layout can put the aircraft on the wrong taxiway or runway.

Why is Chicago O’Hare called KORD?

ORD survives from the airport’s earlier name, Orchard Field. It was renamed Chicago O’Hare International Airport in honour of naval aviator Edward “Butch” O’Hare, but the established three-letter code remained.

Passengers and airlines normally use ORD. Flight plans, navigation databases and aeronautical charts use KORD, following the ICAO convention of adding K to many identifiers in the contiguous United States. On the radio, controllers and pilots usually say “O’Hare” rather than spelling KORD.

How does the KORD runway layout work?

O’Hare has eight runways arranged as six east–west parallels and two northeast–southwest diagonals. Most high-capacity configurations use the east–west system, but pilots must rely on ATIS and ATC rather than assuming a runway from the wind alone.

An east flow generally means aircraft operate towards headings 090–100; a west flow uses the reciprocal 270–280 direction. That still does not reveal which left, centre or right runway will be assigned. Open the KORD airport diagram and instrument procedures before departure or descent, then check the chart revision against the information being used by ATC.

A mistake we see constantly in simulators is treating “27” as a complete runway assignment. At O’Hare, 27L, 27C and 27R are different pieces of pavement with different approaches, taxi routes and missed-approach instructions.

Which runway should pilots expect at O’Hare?

There is no single standard arrival or departure runway at KORD. ATC selects a configuration using several operational factors:

  • wind, runway condition and braking action;
  • visibility, cloud base and available instrument approaches;
  • arrival and departure demand, wake-turbulence spacing and gate location;
  • construction, inspections, snow removal or other runway closures;
  • noise-abatement and traffic-flow requirements.

Listen to the ATIS, but be ready for another assignment before intercepting the final approach. If a runway is unsuitable because of crosswind, landing distance, aircraft equipment or crew qualification, request an alternative early. A different runway can mean delay or extra track miles.

How should pilots prepare for a KORD arrival?

A successful O’Hare arrival depends on briefing the exact runway and retaining enough capacity for a late change. A practical sequence is:

  1. Obtain the ATIS early. Record the landing runways, approach type, wind, altimeter setting and any closed runway or taxiway. Check for a newer ATIS after the next major hand-off.
  2. Verify the STAR and runway transition. Do not assume every transition feeds every approach. Compare the active route in the FMS with the chart, including altitude and speed constraints.
  3. Brief the full approach title. Confirm the runway suffix, localiser or RNAV source, final approach course, intercept altitude, minima and missed approach. If the title includes PRM, real-world crews need the appropriate qualification, equipment and procedures.
  4. Check the automation after any runway change. Reloading an approach can create duplicate fixes, route discontinuities or an unexpected turn back towards an earlier waypoint. Confirm the active leg and flight-mode annunciations before allowing the autopilot to follow it.
  5. Plan the runway exit without forcing it. High-speed exits can reduce taxi time, but an unstable turn-off or heavy braking is not justified merely to meet an expected exit.

Parallel operations may place another aircraft on an adjacent final that appears uncomfortably close. Track only the cleared localiser or RNAV course and do not drift towards traffic on the neighbouring approach.

What changes when departing from KORD?

Departure preparation must cover the SID, first fix, initial altitude, runway and any intersection departure. Recalculate performance if ATC changes the runway or departure point; the presence of a long runway elsewhere on the airport does not make the assigned intersection suitable.

Read back hold-short and runway-crossing instructions exactly. A clearance to taxi towards a runway does not authorise crossing another runway encountered along the route.

How do pilots taxi safely at Chicago O’Hare?

Pilots should taxi at KORD with the diagram open and the clearance divided into manageable sections. The combination of parallel runways, lengthy taxiways and frequency changes makes memory alone unreliable.

  • Write down the route, including every runway crossing and hold-short point.
  • Confirm the runway suffix before crossing or entering. “27R” and “27C” are not interchangeable.
  • Clear the entire runway after landing. Every part of the aircraft must pass the runway holding-position marking before stopping.
  • Change frequency only when instructed. Gate areas may use ramp control or company procedures before the aircraft transfers to O’Hare Ground.
  • Stop and ask when uncertain. Requesting progressive taxi is safer than guessing at an intersection. If possible, stop clear of runways and active taxi lanes before resolving the route.

Moving-map ownship is useful for positional awareness, but it does not replace signs, markings, clearances or the airport diagram in real-world operations. If the painted signs disagree with the chart in a simulator, suspect outdated scenery before assuming that the chart is wrong.

What should VFR pilots know about O’Hare Class B?

KORD lies inside the surface area of Chicago Class B airspace. A VFR pilot must hear an explicit clearance into the Class B; two-way radio contact or use of the aircraft’s call sign by itself is not sufficient.

Access should never be assumed, particularly during a busy arrival bank. Under US regulations, student-pilot operations at O’Hare itself are prohibited. VFR pilots remaining beneath or outside the Class B must still watch shelf altitudes closely and meet the applicable transponder and ADS-B equipment requirements.

Which terminal or gate should pilots use at KORD?

O’Hare has Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5; there is no passenger Terminal 4. Terminal 1 is strongly associated with United, Terminal 3 with American, and Terminal 5 handles most arrivals requiring international customs, but airline and gate allocations change.

Use the flight’s operational gate assignment rather than selecting a terminal solely from the airline name. Pre-cleared international flights can arrive as domestic operations, and some carriers use more than one terminal. In a simulator, the scenery’s era may also place an airline at a gate that no longer matches real operations.

How do you make KORD accurate in a flight simulator?

The scenery, navigation database and chart must describe the same airport layout. O’Hare has changed substantially over time, so old scenery can show missing runways, obsolete taxiways or gates that conflict with modern ATC instructions.

  • Compare the installed runway and taxiway layout with the airport diagram before flying online.
  • Keep only one KORD airport package active. Overlapping scenery or AFCAD files can cause duplicate buildings, misplaced parking, broken taxi routes and conflicting runway starts.
  • Check that the navigation data contains the same runway designators and procedures shown by the scenery.
  • Test gate starts and AI traffic before a network flight, especially if several airport or traffic add-ons modify parking.

Typical signs of a scenery mismatch include ATC assigning a runway that is absent, the aircraft spawning on grass, taxiway signs disagreeing with the chart or an approach centreline missing the rendered runway.
