Fix a missing or non-working MSFS 2024 Community folder: find the active Packages path, correct add-on nesting and check platform limits.
On PC, the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Community folder is usually missing or ignored because you are viewing the simulator’s programme folder instead of its active Packages path, that path was moved, or the add-on is still compressed or nested incorrectly. Console editions have no user-accessible Community folder.
Where is the active MSFS 2024 Community folder?
MSFS 2024 reads the Community folder inside the Packages location recorded by InstalledPackagesPath in its 2024 UserCfg.opt file. This may be completely separate from the simulator’s executable and the drive on which the main application was installed.
- Close the simulator. This prevents it from retaining an old package index or rewriting its configuration while you inspect it.
- Find the MSFS 2024
UserCfg.opt. Its profile location varies by PC edition. If MSFS 2020 is also installed, make sure you have opened the 2024 file rather than the older simulator’s configuration. - Find
InstalledPackagesPath. Open the file in a plain-text editor and locate that entry. The directory it names is the active Packages root. - Open its
Communitysubfolder. Do not use a similarly named folder under an old installation, a Steam library or the main application directory.
Our guide to edition-specific Community-folder paths and hidden-folder access covers the usual PC locations. Treat InstalledPackagesPath as the deciding evidence when the default path and your configuration disagree.
Can I create the Community folder if it is missing?
Yes, on PC you can create a folder named Community inside the active Packages directory if that directory exists but the subfolder does not. Close MSFS 2024 first, create the folder directly under the path specified by InstalledPackagesPath, then restart the simulator.
If the entire Packages location is absent, do not build a guessed directory tree. Complete the simulator’s initial setup first, or correct an unavailable package path. A disconnected drive, changed drive letter or deleted custom directory can leave UserCfg.opt pointing somewhere that no longer exists.
Why are add-ons not loading from the Community folder?
An existing Community folder will still be ignored if it is the wrong one or the package inside it has the wrong structure. Check these causes in order:
- Confirm the active path again. Having more than one Community folder is common after reinstalling MSFS, moving Packages or retaining an MSFS 2020 installation.
- Extract the download. MSFS does not normally load a package left inside a ZIP, RAR or other compressed archive.
- Remove extra folder nesting. A normal package should resemble
Community/package-name/manifest.jsonandCommunity/package-name/layout.json. If those files sit another directory deeper, move the actual package folder up one level. - Test one package by itself. Move the existing add-ons temporarily outside Community, install one package explicitly marked as compatible with MSFS 2024, and restart the simulator. If it loads, restore the others in small groups to identify a conflict.
- Check dependencies and compatibility. Some aircraft, liveries and scenery require a base product or library. An add-on built for MSFS 2020 is not guaranteed to work in 2024, even when its folder structure looks correct.
- Leave Safe Mode and restart. Third-party packages may be disabled when the simulator starts in a recovery or safe mode. Content copied while MSFS is running may also require a full restart before it appears.
- Check storage access. An external drive must be connected and writable. Permission errors, security controls, broken junctions or cloud-sync interference can prevent an installer from writing the complete package.
Marketplace and simulator-managed content should not be used to test the Community folder: it is managed separately and may not be stored there. If files are present but a package remains absent in the simulator, use our deeper checks for package detection, nesting and missing files.
What if the Community folder stopped working after being moved?
A move usually fails because InstalledPackagesPath still references the old Packages root, the destination drive letter changed, or a junction now points to an unavailable directory. Remember that the configuration entry identifies the Packages parent directory, not the Community subfolder itself.
Reconnect the original location or correct the configured package storage while the simulator is closed. If space is the reason for moving it, follow the safe relocation process for another drive rather than dragging folders and leaving the old path behind.
Can MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 share a Community folder?
They should use separate Community folders. Some MSFS 2020 packages work in 2024, but others require an updated build, have obsolete dependencies or cause loading problems. Pointing both simulators at one shared folder also makes fault-finding much harder.
Install the 2024 version of an add-on when one is supplied and introduce older packages individually. Our MSFS 2024 mod-management guidance explains how to keep versions separate and isolate conflicts.
Does MSFS 2024 have a Community folder on Xbox or PlayStation?
Only the PC edition exposes a filesystem Community folder for manually installed packages.
| Platform | User-accessible Community folder | How add-ons are installed |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Yes | Compatible packages can be placed in the active Community folder. |
| Xbox Series X|S | No | Content must be installed through the simulator’s supported in-game system. |
| PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro | No | Content is distributed and managed through supported in-game channels. |
On a console, the missing folder is expected rather than a fault. Creating a Community directory on USB storage will not make the simulator scan PC add-on packages.
