What FPS should I target in MSFS 2024, including VATSIM?

Consistent frame times matter more than a higher average, so leave headroom for dense traffic and large airports.

Which FPS target is best for your flying?

A stable 30–40 FPS suits most MSFS 2024 flying, while 60 FPS is most useful when rapid camera movement and control response matter.

A steady 30 FPS is better than an average of 45 FPS that repeatedly falls into the twenties. Average FPS hides the long frame-time spikes responsible for visible stutters.

Why does 40 FPS often feel smooth in MSFS 2024?

Forty FPS offers a useful compromise between fluid motion and the heavy CPU load created by glass cockpits, detailed airports and traffic.

Display refresh rate matters. On a fixed 60 Hz screen, 30 or 60 FPS produces an even frame cadence, whereas 40 FPS can judder. On a 120 Hz display, 30, 40 and 60 FPS all divide evenly into the refresh rate. A variable refresh rate display can present other frame rates smoothly when they remain inside its operating range.

Set the cap to a rate the simulator can maintain during the demanding parts of a flight, not the rate seen at cruise altitude. Use one primary frame limiter rather than several conflicting caps.

How much performance headroom does VATSIM need?

VATSIM does not require a special frame rate or 60 FPS; the goal is to preserve your chosen 30–40 FPS target when network aircraft appear.

The pilot client itself is rarely the largest load. The usual costs are injected aircraft models, model matching, extra draw calls, VRAM use and the main-thread workload at a complex airport. Our VATSIM performance and model-matching guidance explains which of these to check first.

Do not tune the simulator to exactly 30 FPS at an empty gate if you need 30 during an online arrival rush. There is no universal reserve, but mid-30s to 40 FPS in the same offline airport scenario is a sensible margin before network traffic joins.

Disable MSFS built-in AI, live and multiplayer aircraft while using VATSIM unless you deliberately need them. Otherwise, the simulator may render non-VATSIM traffic alongside pilot-client traffic, creating duplicates and wasting performance. VATSIM flying in MSFS 2024 is a PC use case because its pilot client requires PC software. The Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 editions cannot run the required VATSIM client.

How should I test and lock my FPS target?

Test the busiest realistic scenario you expect to fly, then cap the frame rate below its repeatable minimum rather than chasing the highest number seen in light conditions.

  1. Build a demanding test. Load a complex aircraft at a detailed airport with representative weather, cockpit displays and traffic. Include taxi and approach rather than testing only at the gate.
  2. Measure native performance. Turn frame generation off temporarily so the FPS counter reveals the simulator's real rendered frame rate and underlying stutters.

  4. Choose the sustainable cap. Cap at 30 if the test fluctuates below 40. Choose 40 only if demanding approaches remain above it, and target 60 only when the hardware can hold it without persistent spikes.
  5. Repeat the test online. Recheck at a busy VATSIM airport and reduce displayed-aircraft range, traffic quantity or model complexity before sacrificing cockpit readability.

Should frame-generated FPS count towards the target?

No—judge whether MSFS 2024 meets its FPS target using the native rendered frame rate first, then treat frame generation as an optional improvement to visual motion.

A stable base of roughly 30–40 FPS can look much more fluid with generated frames. Frame generation does not remove main-thread stalls, and control response remains tied more closely to the base rate. It can also introduce artefacts around cockpit displays, labels and fast-moving objects.

If native performance is unstable or persistently below 30 FPS, a displayed generated rate near 60 will not fix the underlying hitching. Correct the CPU, GPU, VRAM or traffic bottleneck before relying on it.
