See how MSFS 2024 can support private pilot training, which skills transfer, how to avoid bad habits, and whether home simulator hours count.
Yes. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 can support real-world private pilot training by rehearsing checklists, cockpit flows, navigation, radio procedures and lesson sequences. It cannot reproduce aircraft feel, peripheral vision, risk or reliable landing cues, and ordinary home-simulator time does not count towards a PPL unless the complete training device is regulator-approved.
What PPL skills can MSFS 2024 help you practise?
MSFS 2024 is most useful as a procedural rehearsal tool, especially after an instructor has taught the exercise correctly. It helps connect the ground-school knowledge, cockpit actions and workload found among the subjects and flight exercises in a typical PPL course.
| Skill | Useful simulator practice | Essential guardrail |
|---|---|---|
| Checklists and flows | Pre-start, start, taxi, before take-off, circuit and shutdown sequences | Use the checklist and procedures supplied by your school for its aircraft |
| VFR navigation | Headings, timings, checkpoints, diversions and workload management | Use approved, up-to-date charts for real flying; simulator scenery and data are not operational sources |
| Radio workload | Preparing calls, changing frequencies and anticipating readbacks | Built-in ATC may use unsuitable phraseology or sequencing, so follow your instructor’s standard |
| Basic instrument work | Attitude, power, trim, scan patterns and navigation-aid familiarisation | Control response and instrument behaviour may differ from the school aircraft |
| Abnormal procedures | Memory-item order, checklists, priorities and decision-making | Do not use the simulator to judge physical warning signs or actual aircraft performance |
Route familiarisation can be valuable, but buildings, obstacles, airspace data and landmarks may be missing or outdated. Read our explanation of where the MSFS 2024 world model is accurate and where it is approximate before treating it as a visual-navigation reference.
What can MSFS 2024 not teach safely?
It cannot reliably teach the physical handling cues that dominate early flight training. A desktop control does not reproduce control loading, acceleration, turbulence, peripheral vision, seat-of-the-pants motion or the consequences of a poor decision.
- Take-off and landing feel: runway perspective, round-out height and flare timing depend heavily on vision, motion and the exact aircraft.
- Trim technique: most consumer controls return towards a fixed mechanical centre, whereas real trim relieves control force.
- Stall recognition: buffet, control feel, sound and motion are incomplete or absent. Use MSFS only to rehearse the procedure your instructor has taught.
- Lookout: a monitor encourages instrument fixation and offers restricted peripheral vision. Keep practising an outside scan rather than chasing perfect instrument indications.
- Aircraft-specific behaviour: even the correct model may have different avionics, engine controls, performance or handling from your school’s particular aircraft.
A mistake we see constantly is practising an exercise repeatedly before receiving instruction. Repetition makes the wrong flow, radio call or control habit harder to remove. MSFS generally provides more value for consolidation than for teaching yourself a manoeuvre from scratch.
Does MSFS 2024 time count towards a PPL?
No—time spent using ordinary MSFS 2024 software with home controls does not count towards required PPL flight or simulator hours. Realistic graphics, a complete cockpit and accurate procedures do not change its regulatory status.
Rules vary between aviation authorities, but credit normally requires a specifically approved flight simulation training device, operated under the applicable training conditions and with instructor supervision or sign-off where required. Approval applies to the complete device and configuration, not simply to the simulator software. Confirm any proposed credit with your flight school before recording it as recognised training.
How should I use MSFS 2024 alongside flying lessons?
Use MSFS 2024 to rehearse one clearly defined lesson objective, then compare your practice with the instructor’s feedback and the approved aircraft documents.
- Ask for the lesson objective. Find out which checks, calls, speeds and decision points your instructor expects rather than inventing a procedure.
- Match the aircraft closely. Select the same type, cockpit layout and avionics where possible; our overview can help you choose an appropriate MSFS 2024 training aircraft. A Cessna 172 variant is not automatically identical to the one at your school.
- Set a realistic scenario. Use a familiar airfield, plausible weight and fuel, suitable weather and the correct runway direction. Do not use simulated weather for an actual go/no-go decision.
- Rehearse the whole sequence. Include the briefing, lookout, radio call, configuration changes and after-action checks—not just the interesting manoeuvre.
- Run it without artificial help. Once familiar, remove route ribbons, AI piloting, auto-rudder and external-camera shortcuts unless an accessibility need requires them. Avoid pausing during workload practice.
- Debrief immediately. Record procedural questions and take them to your instructor. Treat discrepancies between MSFS and the school’s checklist, POH or operating procedures as questions, not simulator corrections to the real aircraft.
Hardware and realism settings that matter
A modest set of well-calibrated controls is more useful than an elaborate cockpit with the wrong procedures. A yoke or stick, separate throttle and rudder pedals cover the main training tasks; rudder pedals usually add more value for circuit practice than extra switch panels.
- Calibrate each axis for smooth movement, full travel and a stable neutral position.
- Use only enough dead zone to remove actual sensor noise.
- Place the cockpit camera at a realistic pilot eye point; an excessively wide field of view distorts runway shape and apparent flare height.
- Check for duplicate bindings, especially throttle, brakes, trim and rudder.
- Use cockpit view for procedural practice rather than an external view.
MSFS 2024’s packaged lessons and Career activities can introduce concepts, but their scores and lesson order are not a PPL syllabus or instructor assessment. Our guide explains how to use built-in Flight Training as structured practice without mistaking completion grades for real-world competence.
The strongest use of MSFS 2024 is chair-flying with an interactive cockpit: learn the sequence on the ground, practise it cheaply, then let a qualified instructor teach and assess the real handling in the aircraft.
