Does MSFS 2024 include the whole world, and is it accurate?

Adam McEnroe
In short

MSFS 2024 covers the whole world, but detail varies. See what is accurate, why scenery looks wrong and how to improve regional detail.

Yes. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 lets you fly anywhere on Earth, including oceans, remote islands and polar regions. It builds that globe from streamed aerial imagery, elevation data, procedural scenery and selected photogrammetry. Accuracy varies sharply: terrain and coastlines are broadly convincing, but individual buildings, airports and imagery may be generic, outdated or wrong.

What does “the whole world” mean in MSFS 2024?

The entire planet is represented as flyable scenery, rather than being restricted to separately purchased regions. You can depart from an included airport, select another position on the world map or fly continuously between continents.

The full high-detail globe is not stored on your PC or console. MSFS 2024 combines core local data with cloud-streamed terrain, imagery, objects and aircraft content. This differs from a static photographic globe; our comparison of Flight Simulator with Google Earth explains why each can show the same location differently.

Worldwide coverage also does not mean every airport, road or settlement has been individually modelled. An unlisted airstrip can still lie within the flyable world, but it may appear only in the underlying imagery or be missing altogether.

How accurate is the MSFS 2024 world?

MSFS 2024 is usually accurate enough for broad visual orientation, but it is not survey-grade and its fidelity changes from one location to the next.

Scenery layerWhat is usually accurateCommon limitations
Terrain and coastlinesMountains, valleys, islands and major bodies of water are generally recognisable.Mesh resolution varies; cliffs, shorelines, bridges and water masks can be distorted.
Aerial imageryRoad patterns, fields, urban areas and large landmarks often match the real location.Images may be several years old or contain colour seams, cloud remnants and mismatched seasons.
PhotogrammetrySupported cities can reproduce real building shapes and dense urban layouts.Coverage is selective. Geometry can look melted or incomplete at close range, especially while data is still loading.
Procedural buildingsBuilding footprints and general settlement density can be plausible.Height, roof type and architectural style are inferred, so individual properties are rarely exact.
Airports and landmarksHandcrafted locations can be highly recognisable, while many standard airports retain a usable layout.Generic airports may have inaccurate buildings, markings, vegetation or outdated runway arrangements.

The best-looking areas usually combine newer imagery, detailed elevation data, photogrammetry and handcrafted scenery. Remote regions, polar terrain and places with poor source imagery tend to receive more generic treatment.

Why does an area look blurry, flat or completely wrong?

Poor scenery can come from either the source data or a streaming problem, and the distinction matters because only the latter can be fixed locally.

  1. Confirm online world data is enabled. If streamed scenery or photogrammetry is disabled, the simulator falls back to simpler terrain and buildings.
  2. Check the connection and data limit. Blurry ground textures that sharpen after waiting usually indicate delayed streaming. Our guide to MSFS 2024 bandwidth, streamed scenery and cache settings covers the relevant controls.
  3. Allow dense scenery to finish loading. Rapid slewing, starting directly over a large city or flying a fast aircraft at low altitude can outrun scenery delivery.
  4. Investigate the rolling cache only when the fault persists. Clearing a corrupted or stale cache can fix repeated tile problems, but increasing its size cannot improve the resolution of weak source imagery.
  5. Check regional content. World Updates can add improved elevation data, cities, airports and landmarks. If one covers the area, follow our instructions for installing and verifying MSFS 2024 World Updates.
  6. Temporarily disable third-party scenery. An old airport or terrain package can conflict with streamed scenery and cause duplicate buildings, trenches, raised runways or missing objects.

A defect that appears in exactly the same place on every flight, after the scenery has fully loaded, is more likely to be part of the underlying world data. Local settings cannot reconstruct a missing building or update old aerial photography.

Which places look most accurate?

Accuracy is local rather than uniform across an entire country.

  • Highest fidelity: handcrafted airports and landmarks, updated regions and well-captured photogrammetry cities.
  • Good general fidelity: areas with clear aerial imagery and detailed terrain mesh, even when buildings are procedural.
  • Lowest fidelity: remote regions, settlements with incomplete mapping, polar areas and locations affected by clouds or poor imagery.

Our selection of places that best demonstrate Microsoft Flight Simulator’s world scenery provides practical examples, although appearance still depends on streamed data and installed regional content.

Will my house appear in MSFS 2024?

Your neighbourhood will often be in the correct geographical position, but your individual house may not be an exact model.

Inside a photogrammetry area, the building may use captured three-dimensional geometry from the date of the survey. Elsewhere, MSFS normally places a generated building using available map information, so the footprint may be close while the height, roof and exterior are different. New developments may be absent when the source imagery predates construction.

Can MSFS 2024 be used for real-world visual navigation?

MSFS 2024 is useful for learning broad terrain relationships and practising landmark recognition, but its scenery must not be treated as authoritative real-world navigation data.

Imagery dates vary, procedural objects can be incorrect and airports may not reflect later construction or operational changes. Use current charts, official notices and approved navigation sources for real flying rather than relying on what appears in the simulator.
