Fix a frozen MSFS Showcase Camera: restore drone bindings, raise movement speed, check camera modes, and identify pause or full-sim freezes.
Microsoft Flight Simulator's Showcase Camera usually appears frozen because a fixed view is selected, drone translation controls are unbound, or movement speed is near zero. Select Drone Camera, restore its movement bindings on the active control profile, and raise Drone Translation Speed. If everything stops, troubleshoot a simulator freeze instead.
How do I unfreeze Showcase Camera?
Work through the camera mode, speed and control profile in that order; most apparently frozen Showcase cameras are input problems rather than simulator faults.
- Select the free-moving Drone Camera. Showcase can include fixed aircraft viewpoints as well as the drone. A fixed view can be cycled but cannot be flown freely around the aircraft.
- Close the camera panel and restore input focus. On PC, click inside the simulator window before testing movement. An open menu, another focused window or a controller prompt can intercept camera commands.
- Increase drone translation speed. Use the assigned command several times, not just once. At the minimum setting, the camera may technically move but appear stationary, particularly when viewing a large aircraft from a distance.
- Check the active device and profile. Open the controls settings, select the keyboard, gamepad, joystick or yoke actually being used, and make unassigned controls visible. Search for
drone, translateandcamera speed, then verify forward, backward, lateral, vertical and speed-adjustment commands. - Remove conflicting camera inputs. Duplicate buttons or a continuously active stick axis can override another command or pull the view back. Test a default profile or temporarily disconnect extra controllers. If a yoke button opens the wrong view or does nothing, follow our camera-button binding checks for flight hardware.
- Reset the camera state. Return to the cockpit, reopen Showcase and select the drone again. Our steps for escaping Showcase and restoring cockpit view cover the relevant MSFS 2024 camera actions. Reload the flight only if switching modes fails.
A mistake we see regularly is editing a controller profile while testing the keyboard, or changing an inactive custom profile. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 also organise some camera controls differently, so command names and old control diagrams may not correspond exactly.

What does “frozen” actually mean?
The exact symptom identifies whether the fault is the camera mode, a binding, pause state or the simulator itself.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| The camera rotates but will not translate | Translation bindings are missing, or translation speed is near zero | Restore movement commands and increase drone speed |
| The view only changes between preset positions | A fixed aircraft camera is selected | Select Drone Camera within Showcase |
| The camera moves but always points at the aircraft | Drone Lock is enabled | Disable Lock if a free viewing direction is required |
| The aircraft flies away while the camera remains in place | Drone Follow is disabled | Enable Follow if the camera should travel with the aircraft |
| The aircraft stops but the camera and menus still work | The flight is paused or Active Pause is engaged | Resume the flight using the assigned pause command |
| The image, menus and controls all stop responding | The simulator has hung | Troubleshoot graphics, add-ons or the selected aircraft |
Why does the camera stay locked to the aircraft?
A camera that moves but remains pointed at the aeroplane is operating in Drone Lock mode, not frozen. Disable Lock when you want to aim independently; leave it enabled for orbiting shots that keep the aircraft centred.
Drone Follow controls a different behaviour. With Follow enabled, the camera travels with the aircraft. With it disabled, the drone remains at a position in the world while the aircraft continues flying away. Toggling the wrong one is a common reason the view feels stuck or tethered.
Is the camera frozen or is the flight paused?
If the camera and menus respond but the aircraft does not move, the flight is paused rather than the Showcase Camera being frozen. Resume normal pause or Active Pause through its assigned control and check that simulation rate has not been reduced unusually far.
If the aircraft continues moving but leaves the frame, the flight is not paused. Enable Drone Follow or reposition the drone; changing pause controls will not correct that behaviour.
What if MSFS freezes when I enter Showcase?
A complete lock-up when switching cameras is a rendering, aircraft or add-on problem, not a missing drone binding. Test the same camera with a default aircraft and uncomplicated airport, then temporarily disable Community-folder camera tools, aircraft modifications and overlays on PC.
If the fault occurs only with one aircraft or livery, treat that add-on as the primary suspect. If it affects every aircraft, check graphics drivers, reduce demanding graphics options and remove external camera utilities before testing again. Our external-camera crash and display-freeze diagnosis covers that separate failure in detail.
