Set up numpad camera hotkeys in MSFS 2024, choose the right view commands, fix Num Lock and profile conflicts, and save cockpit camera slots.
To set up numpad camera hotkeys in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, open Settings > Controls, select the keyboard, create or duplicate a custom profile, search for the required Camera commands, and scan each numpad key into its binding. Check Num Lock and remove input conflicts before saving the profile.
How to assign numpad camera controls
On PC, numpad assignments must be made on the keyboard’s active control profile, not the joystick, yoke or mouse profile.
- Select the keyboard. Open the Controls settings and choose your physical keyboard from the device list. Duplicate the default preset or create a custom profile if the original cannot be edited.
- Choose the camera behaviour. Search by command name using terms such as
camera, quickview, look, translate, reset cockpitorcustom camera. These commands do different jobs, so do not assign keys until you have chosen the required behaviour. - Scan the physical numpad key. Select the command’s binding field, start input scanning and press the key. Confirm that MSFS displays a numpad key rather than a top-row digit, arrow, Home, End, Page Up or Page Down.
- Add modifiers deliberately. Unmodified numpad keys work well for directional views. Reserve modified combinations for camera movement, saved views or external-camera functions.
- Check input conflicts. Search by the assigned input and remove another binding if it could activate in the same camera context. A duplicate is harmless when the commands belong to mutually exclusive contexts, but unwanted cockpit or aircraft-control actions should be cleared.
- Apply and test the profile. Enter a flight and test the bindings from the cockpit. External and free-camera commands are separate, so a cockpit binding will not necessarily work outside the aircraft.
If the control categories are unclear, our explanation of MSFS camera command groups shows how cockpit movement, translation, zoom and external-camera controls differ. Our reference for default MSFS 2024 keyboard bindings is also useful before replacing an existing shortcut.
Which camera commands should I bind?
Bind quickviews for rapid glances, translation commands for adjusting the eyepoint, and custom-camera slots for fixed instrument or seating positions.
| Command type | Behaviour | Good numpad use |
|---|---|---|
| Cockpit Quickview | Snaps towards a preset direction; it is not a saved seating position | Numpad 2, 4, 6 and 8 |
| Cockpit Look or Pan | Rotates the view while the input is used | Directional keys when gradual movement is preferred |
| Translate Cockpit View | Moves the eyepoint without rotating it | Shift plus numpad directions |
| Reset Cockpit View | Returns to the normal cockpit eyepoint | Numpad 5 |
| Load Custom Camera | Recalls a saved cockpit position | A modifier plus Numpad 0–9 |
| Save Custom Camera | Overwrites a numbered camera slot | A harder two-modifier combination |
A practical layout is Numpad 4 and 6 for left and right, Numpad 8 and 2 for up and down, and Numpad 5 for reset. Put translation or saved views behind modifiers so ordinary camera movement cannot overwrite a view.
Avoid relying on Alt plus numpad digits if Windows interprets that combination as character entry. If it behaves inconsistently, use another modifier combination or the top number row for saved-camera slots.
Why are numpad keys not recognised?
The usual cause is Num Lock, an emulated laptop keypad or a different keyboard profile being active.
- Toggle Num Lock: with it disabled, Numpad 1 may be reported as End, Numpad 7 as Home and Numpad 8 as Up Arrow. Toggle it before scanning and use the state you intend to keep while flying.
- Check the detected input name: a compact keyboard or separate USB keypad may send ordinary digits instead of distinct numpad scan codes.
- Confirm the active profile: MSFS can retain several keyboard presets. Make sure the profile edited in the menu is still selected after loading the aircraft.
- Disable Mouse Keys if necessary: the Windows accessibility feature can use the numpad to move the pointer instead of passing the input normally.
- Leave menus before testing: text fields and menu focus can consume number keys even though the in-flight binding is valid.
- Check the camera context: cockpit, external and free-camera commands need their own assignments.
Can numpad keys recall saved cockpit views?
Yes. Bind the numbered Load Custom Camera commands to your preferred numpad combinations, then use the matching Save Custom Camera commands to store each view.
Make the save chord harder to press than the load chord; accidentally overwriting a carefully positioned instrument view is a common mistake. Camera bindings are part of the keyboard profile, while the stored view positions are associated with the aircraft and may need setting again for a different aircraft or variant.
Our step-by-step method for saving and recalling custom cockpit views covers positioning the eyepoint, assigning numbered slots and diagnosing views that fail to load.
