Fix a PMDG 737 tiller not working in MSFS: set the correct steering axis, clear binding conflicts, and check pushback and hydraulics.
The PMDG 737 tiller usually fails because the hardware axis is bound to Rudder Axis rather than Nose Wheel Steering Axis, the PMDG steering option expects a different input, or another controller is overriding it. Steering also requires weight on wheels, hydraulic System A pressure and no active pushback steering lock.
How do I fix the PMDG 737 tiller axis?
Bind a dedicated analogue control to the nose-wheel steering command, then match that assignment to the steering method selected within the PMDG aircraft.
- Confirm that MSFS detects the control. Open the simulator's control settings, select the exact joystick, throttle or tiller profile and move the intended axis. Use input search where available. - Assign Nose Wheel Steering Axis. Search for
Nose Wheel Steering Axisand bind the tiller control to that command. The menu layout differs between Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, but the required command is the same. - Check the full axis range. Move it from full left through centre to full right. Reverse the axis only if steering operates in the wrong direction. A slider that does not physically return to centre can work, but it must be manually positioned at its midpoint.
- Match the PMDG steering method. If your PMDG build provides a steering-input choice in its aircraft settings, select the separate tiller or nose-wheel steering axis. Choose the rudder-pedal option only when you intend to steer through the rudder axis; wording and location can vary between PMDG builds.
- Remove duplicate assignments. Inspect every connected joystick, pedal set, throttle and gamepad. Keep the rudder pedals on

In the 737's normal configuration, nose-wheel steering uses hydraulic System A. Do not test it with the aircraft cold and dark merely because electrical power is available; confirm System A pressure first.
- Finish pushback completely. Disconnect the tug and allow any steering-bypass or towing state to clear. A pushback utility that still considers the tug attached can leave the nose wheel disconnected from the tiller.
What does each steering symptom mean?
The point at which steering stops responding usually identifies the fault more quickly than reinstalling the aircraft.

Why do the rudder pedals move the 737 only slightly?
This is often normal 737 behaviour rather than a failed tiller. With separate tiller logic enabled, rudder-pedal steering is limited to roughly 7 degrees either side, while the tiller can command about 78 degrees for tight ramp turns.
A mistake we see constantly is assigning a joystick twist only to Rudder Axis and expecting full tiller authority. Can I steer the PMDG 737 without a physical tiller?
A dedicated tiller is not required; a joystick twist, thumb stick or self-centring rotary axis can serve as the nose-wheel steering control.
- Use a separate analogue axis when you want realistic pedal and tiller authority.
- Use the PMDG rudder-steering option, where provided, when no spare axis is available.
- Avoid left and right button bindings if possible. They produce abrupt steering and make it difficult to centre the wheel during taxi.
Disable rudder or steering assistance and AI piloting while testing. These systems can inject their own commands and conceal whether the hardware assignment is working.
What if the tiller still does not work?
If the axis, PMDG setting and hydraulic configuration are correct, test with a fresh controller profile and no external pushback or input utilities running.

Only then update or repair the PMDG installation. An aircraft update can correct a control-system compatibility problem, but it will not repair a bad MSFS binding; use the supported PMDG update and repair process rather than deleting packages at random.
