Which has better systems and flight modelling?
Both reproduce their intended aircraft deeply enough for realistic gate-to-gate procedures, so there is no useful overall winner on systems depth alone. The meaningful difference is how faithfully each product expresses the real aircraft's design philosophy.
Fenix demands Airbus mode awareness. You must understand managed versus selected guidance, read the flight mode annunciator, monitor ECAM and know what changes when the aircraft leaves normal law. Its automation reduces routine control inputs, but it does not remove pilot workload.
The PMDG 737 exposes more conventional flying tasks: trim, thrust management, MCP selections, LNAV and VNAV behaviour, and close monitoring of the flight mode annunciator. A PMDG 777 is a different comparison because its fly-by-wire controls and extensive automation make it closer to modern Airbus workload than the 737 is.
Neither product is certified training software, and the informal term “study level” does not guarantee identical coverage of every circuit breaker, failure or maintenance function. For home simulation, both are designed around procedural accuracy rather than simplified default-aircraft operation.
Which runs better in MSFS?
There is no dependable performance winner across all computers because the result changes with the PMDG aircraft, airport scenery, traffic, weather, display resolution and whether the simulator is CPU- or GPU-limited.
Fenix requires its Windows companion application, so that process must be included when diagnosing stutters or failed aircraft initialisation. PMDG uses a different architecture, making a simple comparison of process usage or average frame rate unreliable.
Test both under the same aircraft state, airport, weather, traffic and cockpit camera. Pay attention to frame-time consistency, not only the highest FPS figure; dense scenery or injected traffic can outweigh the difference between the two aircraft.
Do PMDG and Fenix work in MSFS 2024 and on consoles?
Compatibility must be checked for the exact aircraft, simulator generation and platform. A Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 purchase should not automatically be assumed to include an MSFS 2024 licence or installer.
Fenix depends on external Windows software and is therefore a PC product, not an Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5 add-on. PMDG availability varies by aircraft: some products may be distributed for consoles through the in-simulator Marketplace, but support on one console or simulator version does not guarantee support on another.
What commonly goes wrong after installation?
- Conflicting assistance settings: Disable AI piloting and intrusive handling assists when they override trim, throttles, radios or checklists.
- Duplicate control bindings: Check every connected throttle, joystick and gamepad. Multiple assignments to the same axis commonly cause jumping throttles, spoilers or unwanted control movement.
- Incorrect throttle calibration: Configure the axes through the aircraft's own options where provided. Fenix users should verify each Airbus thrust detent rather than relying only on the default MSFS response curve.
- Loading fuel and payload twice: Use the aircraft's intended tablet or cockpit workflow and allow it to complete. Changing weight simultaneously through the MSFS interface can produce mismatched figures or centre-of-gravity problems.
- Ignoring the flight mode annunciator: A correctly programmed route does not guarantee that LNAV, VNAV or an Airbus managed mode is active. The annunciator, not the magenta line, tells you what the aeroplane is actually doing.
- Installing the wrong edition: Confirm that the installer and package explicitly support your copy of MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 before troubleshooting an aircraft that never appears.
