How do I release the parking brake in a flight simulator?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn how to release the parking brake in a flight simulator and fix stuck brakes, reversed axes, conflicting bindings or wheel chocks.

In flight simulators generally, release the parking brake by pressing the control bound to Toggle Parking Brake or by clicking the cockpit brake handle. FSX uses Ctrl+. by default. If the brake indication clears but the aircraft remains stationary, check toe-brake axes, wheel chocks and duplicate controller bindings.

How do I find the parking brake control?

The safest method is to check the active control profile rather than assume a particular key is assigned. Default bindings differ between simulators, platforms and controller presets.

  1. Open the control settings and select the keyboard, gamepad, yoke or throttle profile you are actually using.
  2. Show all available commands, including unassigned controls, and search for parking brake.
  3. Assign the command labelled Toggle Parking Brake, Set Parking Brake or similar. Use a toggle command for a momentary button; use separate on/off commands for a latching hardware switch when the simulator supports them.
  4. Return to the cockpit and operate the control once. Confirm that the parking-brake handle moves or that the PARK BRAKE indication extinguishes.

The handle's direction is aircraft-specific, so use its position or annunciator rather than assuming that down always means released. Some detailed aircraft also expect the toe brakes to be depressed while the parking-brake handle is moved.

Which key releases the parking brake?

There is no universal parking-brake key across every flight simulator, although several Microsoft-based simulators share similar controls.

SimulatorUsual methodCommon gotcha
FSXPress Ctrl+. to toggle the parking brakeThe period key alone operates the normal wheel brakes
Prepar3DUse the assigned parking-brake command or cockpit handleImported and custom profiles may replace the familiar FSX binding
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020/2024Use the parking-brake binding shown in the active device profileKeyboard, console and controller presets can have different assignments
X-PlaneUse the assigned parking or maximum-braking command, or the cockpit controlAircraft-specific systems may behave differently from the default aircraft
DCSUse the binding or cockpit control provided by that aircraft moduleBrake systems and commands vary between aircraft

FSX users can confirm the original shortcut in our complete FSX keyboard-command reference.

Why will the aircraft not move after releasing the brake?

If the parking-brake indication is off but the aircraft remains stationary, another brake input or ground restraint is usually responsible.

  • Reversed toe-brake axes: Open the controller calibration or sensitivity display. Both brake axes should read fully released when your feet are off the pedals. Use the simulator's reverse-axis option if they show full braking at rest.
  • Duplicate assignments: Remove brake-axis bindings from throttles, gamepads or spare controllers that are not being used. A noisy axis can apply enough braking to prevent taxiing.
  • A switch continually sending “on”: A two-position switch assigned to a toggle command can produce confusing results. Map it to explicit parking-brake on and off commands, or use a momentary button for the toggle.
  • Wheel chocks: Remove chocks through the aircraft's tablet, electronic flight bag or ground-services panel. Releasing the cockpit brake does not remove them.
  • Residual wheel braking: Press and fully release both toe brakes once. This can clear a held brake input and is required by some realistically modelled parking-brake systems.
  • Insufficient taxi power: Confirm the engines are running correctly and the propeller or thrust controls are set for taxi. Do not apply high power until brake and chock indications have been checked.

A mistake we see constantly is increasing power while a reversed brake axis is still at 100 per cent. That overheats or damages tyres and brakes in aircraft that model failures, without solving the input problem. Our FSX toe-brake axis setup instructions cover calibration, reversal and left/right assignments; if the problem persists, follow the FSX stuck-brake troubleshooting checks.

What is the difference between wheel brakes and the parking brake?

Wheel brakes provide temporary braking while a key or pedal is held, whereas the parking brake remains set after the control is released. In FSX, for example, . operates the wheel brakes and Ctrl+. toggles the parking brake.

For taxiing, release the parking brake and control speed with short, progressive applications of the toe brakes. Holding the brakes continuously while adding substantial power is usually a sign that the throttle, steering or brake axes need adjustment.
