In most flight simulators, reduce turbulence by lowering the turbulence or weather-effects setting, selecting calm manual weather, and disabling wake turbulence separately. Live or real-world weather may restore gusts and thermals, so switch it off. If shaking remains, check controller sensitivity, trim, airspeed and weather add-ons.
How do I reduce turbulence step by step?
The dependable method is to remove each source separately, because one turbulence control may not govern gusts, thermals, mountain waves and aircraft wakes.
- Open the assistance, realism or weather options. Look for settings named Turbulence, Gusts, Thermals, Wind Variability or Weather Effects. Select the lowest level or disable the effect where the simulator permits it.
- Turn off live or real-world weather. Choose clear or calm manual weather instead. Check every wind layer, not just surface wind, and remove gusts or thermal activity.
- Disable wake turbulence separately. This prevents disturbed air behind other aircraft but does not remove ordinary atmospheric turbulence.
- Test in a free-flight session. Fly away from mountains, storms and other aircraft. Authored activities, challenges and online missions may lock their weather.
- Check weather add-ons. An external weather system can overwrite the simulator's manual conditions or inject its own turbulence.

The exact control depends on the simulator and sometimes on the selected flight mode.

Can turbulence be turned off completely?
Not in every simulator or flight mode. MSFS 2020, for example, offers Low rather than Off; combining Low with calm manual weather is the closest practical option.
Even with atmospheric and wake turbulence removed, the flight model may still simulate stall buffet, overspeed vibration, rotor or propeller effects and unstable airflow caused by an aircraft's configuration. Those effects should be corrected by changing the aircraft state rather than the weather setting.
Why is the aircraft still shaking with turbulence off?
Shaking in calm weather often comes from the controls, camera or aircraft rather than the atmosphere.
- Noisy or duplicated axes: Check whether pitch, roll or rudder inputs flicker while the controller is centred. Remove duplicate bindings and add only enough dead zone to stop the noise.
- Stall buffet: Increase airspeed or reduce angle of attack. Ice, excessive weight and an unsuitable flap setting can make the buffet appear sooner.
- Overspeed vibration: Reduce speed and confirm that neither the aircraft nor deployed gear and flaps are outside their limits.
- Autopilot oscillation: Disconnect it temporarily, stabilise and trim the aircraft, then check speed, loading and centre of gravity.
- Camera effects: Head movement or cockpit vibration can shake the view while the aircraft's altitude and attitude remain steady. Reduce camera-motion settings separately.
- Weather injection: Disable the add-on or its turbulence options rather than changing only the simulator's weather panel.
For a quick diagnosis, select clear calm weather, disable wakes and hand-fly at a normal cruise speed. A steady flight path with a moving view indicates a camera effect; moving control surfaces suggest an input problem. Should I use Low or realistic turbulence?
Choose Low or calm weather for initial training, accessibility, VR comfort and fault-finding; choose realistic turbulence when practising weather handling and workload management.
- Low: Keeps some atmospheric movement without the strongest reactions.
- Calm or effectively off: Best for testing controls, aircraft add-ons and autopilot behaviour.
- Realistic: Preserves the full response to the selected or live weather, including gusts and disturbed air where modelled.
Realistic does not mean every flight should be rough. A calm, stable air mass can produce a smooth flight, while wind over terrain, convection and nearby aircraft can create turbulence even beneath clear skies.
