Can you use Steam Link for PC VR, and how do you set it up?

Ian Stephens
In short

Steam Link PC VR setup explained: install SteamVR, pair your headset, select OpenXR, optimise Wi-Fi and fix lag or connection failures.

Yes. Steam Link can stream SteamVR wirelessly from a VR-capable Windows PC to a supported standalone headset, most commonly Meta Quest. Install SteamVR and the headset’s Steam Link app, place both devices on the same local network, pair them with the displayed code, then start SteamVR and launch the VR game or simulator.

What do you need for Steam Link PC VR?

Steam Link VR requires a supported headset, a PC capable of running SteamVR and a fast local network. This is a general PC VR connection method, including for compatible flight simulators; it does not convert an ordinary flat-screen game into VR.

  • A supported standalone VR headset: Install the official VR version of Steam Link from the headset’s app catalogue. The conventional Steam Link client for televisions, phones or tablets is not a VR headset driver.
  • A VR-capable Windows PC: The PC must render the simulator and encode the video stream at the same time. Meeting a game’s minimum desktop requirements does not necessarily mean it will run well in VR.
  • Steam and SteamVR: Install both on the PC and sign in before pairing.
  • A suitable local network: Internet download speed is not the main factor. Performance depends on the path between the PC, router and headset inside the home.
ConnectionRecommended arrangementReason
PC to routerEthernet cableAvoids making the stream cross Wi-Fi twice
Headset to routerNearby 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-FiProvides the bandwidth and low latency needed for head movement
Local networkSame normal LAN, not a guest networkGuest isolation can prevent pairing and discovery
Mesh networkHeadset near the same access point, preferably with wired backhaulExtra wireless hops can cause blur and intermittent stutter

If the simulator itself has not yet been configured for VR, follow our general flight-simulator VR setup sequence before tuning Steam Link.

How do you set up Steam Link for VR?

The basic setup is to prepare SteamVR on the PC, pair the headset over the local network and then confirm that SteamVR is the active runtime.

  1. Install and update SteamVR. Open Steam on the PC, install SteamVR and allow any pending SteamVR, graphics-driver or headset-app updates to finish before pairing.
  2. Connect the PC by Ethernet. Plug the PC into the main router or access point where possible. A fully wireless PC-to-router-to-headset path is a common cause of latency and compression artefacts.
  3. Join the headset to the same network. Use the router’s 5 GHz or 6 GHz band where supported. Do not use a guest SSID, VPN or network setting that isolates wireless devices from wired clients.
  4. Open Steam on the PC. Leave it running, then start the Steam Link VR app inside the headset.
  5. Pair the headset and PC. Select the detected computer and enter the displayed pairing code when Steam requests it on the PC. Approve any legitimate local-network firewall prompt for Steam or SteamVR.
  6. Start the VR connection. Choose the option to connect or begin streaming. Steam Link should start SteamVR automatically; if it does not, launch SteamVR on the PC and reconnect.
  7. Check the OpenXR runtime. OpenXR simulators must use SteamVR as their active OpenXR runtime when connecting through Steam Link. The exact button location can move between SteamVR releases, but it is found in SteamVR’s OpenXR settings. Microsoft Flight Simulator users can follow our SteamVR and OpenXR runtime instructions for MSFS.
  8. Launch the simulator. Start it through the SteamVR dashboard or from the PC desktop, then activate its VR mode if required. Keep the HOTAS, yoke, pedals, keyboard and mouse connected to the PC rather than the headset.

Begin with automatic or default SteamVR resolution and Steam Link streaming quality. Confirm that the connection is stable before raising resolution or encoding quality; changing several settings together makes the limiting factor difficult to identify.

Can Steam Link run non-Steam VR simulators?

Yes, a simulator does not have to be purchased through Steam, but it must support SteamVR or OpenXR through the SteamVR runtime. For example, an OpenXR simulator installed outside Steam can still display through Steam Link when SteamVR is selected as the active OpenXR runtime.

Software written only for another proprietary VR runtime may not work through Steam Link. Steam Link transports the SteamVR session; it does not automatically add SteamVR or OpenXR support to an incompatible application.

Steam Link PC VR troubleshooting

PC not found or pairing repeats

Failure to find the PC usually means device isolation, a VPN or a firewall is blocking local discovery. Confirm that Steam is open, both devices are on the same LAN, the headset is not using a guest network and Steam and SteamVR are permitted on the private local network. Do not permanently disable the firewall.

If the pairing code keeps returning, update the Steam Link headset app and SteamVR, remove the old paired-PC entry if that option is available, restart both devices and pair again.

VR opens on the monitor but not in the headset

A monitor-only launch usually means the application started in desktop mode or another OpenXR runtime is active. Start SteamVR first, set it as the OpenXR runtime and use the simulator’s own command to enter VR after it has loaded.

If SteamVR fails to initialise or reports a compositor problem, use our diagnostic steps for SteamVR error 450.

Stutter, blur or audio drop-outs

Blocky scenery, sudden blur during head movement and audio interruptions normally point to the network. Wire the PC to the router, move the headset closer to the access point, stop large downloads and avoid wireless extenders or unnecessary mesh hops. Lower Steam Link’s streaming quality until the connection is stable.

Consistently low frame rate without network drop-outs points instead to the PC. Reduce the simulator’s demanding graphics options or SteamVR render resolution. Cockpit displays, glass-cockpit refresh settings, clouds, shadows and traffic can be particularly expensive in flight simulators.

HOTAS, keyboard or audio does not work

Flight controls remain PC peripherals and should be assigned inside the simulator as usual; Steam Link’s motion-controller mapping does not replace a joystick or yoke. If keyboard shortcuts fail, bring the simulator window into the foreground on the PC. For missing sound, select the headset or Steam streaming audio device in Windows and check that Steam Link has not left the monitor speakers active.

Should you use Steam Link or a wired connection?

Choose Steam Link when you want wireless PC VR, the headset officially supports its VR app, the simulator works through SteamVR and the local network is strong. It is straightforward and does not require the game itself to have been bought through Steam.

Choose a wired headset connection when consistent latency and cockpit-text clarity matter more than freedom from a cable, especially during long instrument flights. If you want additional control over wireless encoding and streaming behaviour, our Virtual Desktop setup for Quest flight simulators covers the main alternative.
