Learn how to switch to MSFS external camera views, orbit, zoom and reset them, then fix bindings and choose chase view or Drone Camera.
In Microsoft Flight Simulator, trigger Toggle Cockpit/External View—End on the standard PC keyboard profile—to enter or leave the chase camera. Orbit with the external-look or freelook controls, zoom with the mouse wheel, and use Reset External View to re-centre. Drone Camera is a separate, free-moving mode.
How do I switch to external view in MSFS?
The dependable method in MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 is to bind the command named Toggle Cockpit/External View. Menu wording and default controller buttons can vary by platform and control preset, so the assignment displayed in Controls is authoritative.
- Open the Controls screen and select the keyboard, controller, yoke or other device you intend to use.
- Show all available commands, including unassigned ones, and search for
CockpitorExternal. - Locate Toggle Cockpit/External View and assign a convenient key or button if it is blank.
- Save or apply the control profile, return to the aircraft and press the assigned control once to enter the external chase view. Press it again to return to the cockpit.
On the standard PC keyboard profile, End performs this switch. Insert normally opens the Drone Camera instead, which is a common source of confusion. Our reference for MSFS keyboard and camera commands lists the related view, quickview and reset controls.
Assignments are device-specific. Changing a keyboard profile does not repair an unassigned controller button, and selecting the wrong profile can make a valid binding appear to do nothing.
How do I orbit, zoom and reset the external camera?
Orbit the chase camera with freelook, zoom with the external-view zoom controls, and re-centre it with Reset External View.
| Action | Standard PC behaviour | Command to find in Controls |
|---|---|---|
| Orbit around the aircraft | Hold the right mouse button and move the mouse | External View Freelook or the external look directions |
| Zoom in or out | Turn the mouse wheel | External View Zoom In/Out |
| Return behind the aircraft | Ctrl+Space on the standard keyboard profile | Reset External View |
| Check a wing or rear angle | Use the assigned directional quickview | External Quickview Left, Right or Rear |
A held freelook command returns control when released; a freelook toggle remains active until pressed again. External quickviews may also snap back when released, so they are better for brief wing checks than for composing a permanent camera angle.
If the wheel works in the cockpit but not outside, bind the specific external zoom commands and check that the simulator window—not an open panel—has input focus. See our camera zoom controls and troubleshooting steps if the view still refuses to move.
Should I use External View or Drone Camera?
Use External View while flying, Drone Camera for free placement, and external quickviews for immediate wing or rear-facing angles.
| Camera mode | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| External View | Flying from an aircraft-following chase camera | Remains attached to the aircraft rather than fixed in the world |
| External quickview | Fast wing, side or rear checks | Uses predefined aircraft-relative directions |
| Drone Camera | Screenshots, fly-bys and freely positioned viewpoints | Has a separate set of movement and rotation bindings |
| Walkaround in MSFS 2024 | Inspecting the aircraft on foot in supported ground situations | Is not an in-flight chase-camera replacement |
MSFS 2020 may group Drone Camera options under Showcase, while MSFS 2024 presents its camera modes differently. The practical distinction is unchanged: the external camera follows the aeroplane; the drone can move independently. Our Drone Camera control guide covers movement speed, rotation and aircraft-follow settings without duplicating them here.
Why are my external camera controls not working?
Most external-camera failures come from using the wrong device profile or binding a command from the cockpit or drone control group.
- The view does not switch: select the device that generated the input, show unassigned commands and confirm that Toggle Cockpit/External View is present in its active profile.
- The drone opens instead: remove the Toggle Drone Camera assignment from that button and bind Toggle Cockpit/External View instead.
- The view moves and immediately snaps back: you are probably using a held quickview rather than freelook. Bind External View Freelook Toggle if you want continuous mouse movement.
- The camera tracks an airport or point of interest: Smart Camera is active. Release or disable its binding before trying to orbit normally.
- A yoke button performs two camera actions: search by input as well as by command name and remove the conflicting assignment. Different connected devices can each contribute duplicate camera inputs.
- Reset affects the cockpit but not the chase view: bind Reset External View rather than the similarly named cockpit reset command.
When a controller or yoke button consistently triggers the wrong camera function, use our method for finding and correcting conflicting camera bindings.
Can I save an external camera angle?
Built-in custom-camera slots are mainly intended for cockpit viewpoints, not persistent external fly-by positions. For repeatable outside angles, use external quickviews; for a freely placed shot, use Drone Camera and expect to position it again when the flight or camera state is reset.
