Should you use autorudder in a flight simulator? Learn when it helps, when to switch it off, and how to prevent pedal and joystick conflicts.
Across Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX and Prepar3D, use autorudder if you fly with a keyboard, a basic gamepad or no usable yaw axis. Turn it off with calibrated pedals or a twist joystick: manual rudder gives more realistic take-offs, coordinated turns, slips and crosswind landings. It remains useful as an accessibility aid.
What does autorudder do?
Autorudder automatically adds yaw input when you command a turn, reducing the need to operate the rudder separately. The exact behaviour varies: some simulators primarily coordinate turns, while some assistance modes also simplify take-off or ground steering.
It is not the same as an autopilot or an aircraft's yaw damper. Autorudder is a simulator-level control aid; a yaw damper is part of the modelled aircraft system and deals mainly with unwanted yawing motion.
Some implementations work differently between aircraft, particularly sophisticated add-ons. They may also treat nosewheel steering separately, so autorudder does not guarantee that an aircraft will steer properly while taxiing.
When should I use autorudder?
Use autorudder when your controls cannot provide smooth, proportional yaw input or when manual rudder operation is physically impractical.

Accessibility takes priority over realism. If autorudder makes the simulator usable or reduces pain and fatigue, leave it enabled regardless of the controller attached.
Does autorudder reduce realism?
Generic autorudder reduces realism because real rudder demand changes with airspeed, power, wind, bank angle and aircraft design. A fixed assistance rule cannot reproduce every deliberate slip, crosswind correction or response to asymmetric thrust.
Modern airliners complicate the comparison: pilots may use little pedal during an ordinary turn because the aircraft's yaw damper or flight-control system handles much of the coordination. That does not make the simulator's generic autorudder equivalent to the real system. Should beginners start with autorudder on?
Beginners can start with autorudder enabled while learning pitch, power, trim and basic navigation. Once those tasks are manageable, switching it off prevents the assistance from hiding poor coordination and develops better directional control.

How do I switch from autorudder to manual control?
Set up and verify one clean rudder axis before disabling the assistance.
- Choose one yaw control. Assign your pedals, joystick twist or gamepad control to the simulator's proportional rudder axis rather than only to digital rudder-left and rudder-right commands.
- Remove duplicate bindings. Check every connected controller for a second rudder assignment. Keep toe-brake axes separate from the rudder axis.
- Calibrate the axis. Confirm that it centres correctly, reaches both ends and moves in the expected direction. Use only enough dead zone to stop centre noise; an excessive dead zone makes corrections abrupt.
- Disable the assistance. Look for
Auto-rudder,Rudder Assistor a similarly named option under assistance, realism or flight-control settings. The menu location differs between simulators and versions. - Test before flying a demanding aircraft. Check the cockpit pedals or control-input display, taxi slowly, then fly a simple aircraft in calm weather. Apply small inputs rather than chasing every movement.

Why does the aircraft still yaw with autorudder off?
An aircraft can yaw with autorudder disabled because the flight model is producing normal aerodynamic and ground forces.
- Propeller aircraft may pull or yaw because of torque, P-factor and propwash.
- A crosswind can weathercock the aircraft during taxi, take-off and landing.
- Adverse yaw appears when ailerons create unequal drag.
- Unequal engine thrust causes strong yaw in multi-engine aircraft.
- Nosewheel steering, differential braking or an uncentred controller can move the aircraft on the ground.
If the rudder itself moves without your command, display the simulator's live control inputs and disconnect controllers one at a time. A duplicated binding, noisy axis, incorrect centre or another assistance mode is more likely than an aerodynamic effect. Autorudder should not be used to conceal that fault.
Can I leave autorudder on with rudder pedals?
Do not normally combine autorudder with working pedals. The simulator may blend the automated input with your axis, causing delayed responses, unexpected surface movement or the impression that the pedals are weak.
Disable autorudder once the pedals are calibrated, but retain it if required for accessibility. Remember that toe brakes and, on some aircraft, nosewheel steering remain separate controls; turning on autorudder does not necessarily operate either one.
