This complete freeware McDonnell Douglas MD-11 package showcases Korean Air’s once-used passenger variant while including a fully integrated panel and sound configuration for FS2004. Although Korean Air’s main fleet transitioned to the MD-11 cargo version in the 1990s, this repaint by Dirk Kiefer revives the carrier’s notable passenger-liveried trijet. Developed by iFDG [International Flightsim Design Group], this release merges visual fidelity and authentic dynamics into a single installation.
Distinctive Tri-Jet Design and Flight Characteristics
The MD-11 stands out even among wide-body airframes because it employs three engines instead of two. This layout, derived from the DC-10, provides stable handling and comfortable long-haul capability. Aerodynamic enhancements on the MD-11, such as advanced winglets and refined wing trailing edges, optimize lift and reduce drag, allowing extended routes. In addition, a compact horizontal stabilizer with integrated fuel capacity helps improve overall efficiency. As a result, pilots can experience balanced control responses, especially noticeable during climb phases and approach segments.
Trustworthy Engine Options
Operators had multiple powerplant variants: General Electric’s CF6-80C2 and Pratt & Whitney’s PW4460 or PW4462. These turbine engines allow thrust outputs that meet both passenger and cargo requirements. The optional Extended Range (ER) capability can further increase maximum takeoff weight, enhancing non-stop mileage. For reference, MD-11 models in the ER configuration can approach distances of up to 8,225 statute miles (13,230 km).
Expansive Seating and Cargo Flexibility
Standard passenger arrangements on the MD-11 range from around 285 seats in a three-class layout to over 400 in an economy-focused configuration. Below the cabin, ample room remains for palletized or containerized freight bookings. Consequently, airlines can generate additional revenue with minimal reconfiguration. Notably, Korean Air concentrated on cargo variants after the initial passenger service era, reflecting the MD-11’s strong suitability for transporting substantial loads across long-haul routes.
Advanced Flight Deck and Automated Systems
Pilots familiar with this trijet can leverage a modern cockpit setup that integrates digital instrumentation displayed on six cathode ray tubes [CRTs]. This environment reduces pilot workload by handling normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures through computerized system controllers. A dual flight management system (FMS) refines fuel efficiency, while the dual digital automatic flight control system (AFCS) includes wind-shear guidance. These tools, combined with interlinked yoke and column controls, streamline crew coordination for any flight scenario.

Historical Production Highlights
Production of the MD-11 began in Long Beach, California, and the first flight took place on January 10, 1990. Certification followed later that year, and deliveries commenced in December 1990. In contrast to its DC-10 predecessor, the MD-11 extends the fuselage to nearly 201 feet (61.2 m), accommodating a higher passenger count. Throughout its service life, the aircraft proved itself adept at long-range missions and eventually found a niche in cargo operations worldwide.
iFDG’s Complete Package and Credits
This release features the iFDG model with associated flight dynamics (FDE) created by Albaro Villegas. Comprehensive textures supplied by Ben Jones ensure reflective surfaces and realistic detail. Meanwhile, overall evaluation was conducted by the MD-11 Beta Team, ensuring reliable performance in FS2004. The Korean Air repaint by Dirk Kiefer adds a regional authenticity that many simmers seek, especially those interested in historical airline paint schemes.
Installation and Usage Notes
To install, extract the contents to your Flight Simulator “aircraft” directory. The included panel and sound folders integrate automatically with Flight Simulator 2004. Move the effect files into the FS2004 “EFFECTS” folder to activate them in-sim using the “I” key. The package comes with everything needed for immediate use, so you can load the aircraft from the menu and take it for a test flight right away.
