FSX WashDCX Scenery

WashDCX beta refreshes Washington, D.C. with sharper satellite ground imagery, corrected building scale around the National Mall, and added landmarks such as the Air Force Memorial, WWII Memorial, and American Indian Museum. Optimized SketchUp-based models limit draw calls, while custom traffic and landclass updates improve low-level flights in Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

WashDCX beta is a complete upgrade to the default FSX Washington D.C. scenery. You will find included in this scenery satellite images; traffic files; and additional significant landmarks and buildings surrounding the downtown National Mall area. Included are several models from Google Sketchup taking great care to minimize drawcalls for each one. Although all models may not appear "perfect" in the beta version, it shows what can be done and it is something that can be improved on. You will find a drastic improvement of flying over Washington DC when compared to the default FSX scenery. This is the first beta release. By Larry Robbins.

WashDCX beta is the very first version of my Washington D.C. Project for FSX. I choose the city of Washington D.C. for two reasons: I live here which means I am intimately familiar with the lay of the land; and because it is one of the better developed default cities in FSX. There is a signifant problem with many of the default FSX buildings surrounding the National Mall, however. Many are not accurately scaled to size. This has been corrected within WashDCX. I have also managed to import a few additional models of several important buildings and monuments created with Google Sketchup which are missing in the default FSX scenery. Altough not all models would be considered "perfect" in this beta release, I have learned a method that works and can be improved upon. I have taken great care to minimize as many drawcalls for each new model as possible. Below is a list of new additions you will find as you explore the scenery. Please use Google Earth or Google Maps to locate each object if you are not familiar with the area.

Addon Models:

Washington Monument Bookstore in front of the Washington Monument.
US Flags surrounding the Washington Monument.
Air Force Memorial near the Pentagon.
WWII Memorial near Reflection Pool opposite the Lincoln Memorial.
American Indian Museum SE End of the National Mall near Capital Hill.
Federal USDA Building (Orange Rooftop) near Washington Monument.

Other Features:

Rescaled and repositioned many default FSX buildings
Satellite images of: KDCA; Arlington National Cemetery; White House Grounds; National Mall; Capital Hill.
City traffic surrounding the National Mall, Arlington Cemetery, Pentagon, Arlington Bridge, and KDCA.

Install:

1. Run the WashDCX beta.exe installer and ensure that the "WashDCX" file is unzipped into your Microsoft Flight Simulator X "Addon Scenery" folder.
2. Fire up FSX and activate scenery (Add Scenery) under Scenery Library.
3. Restart FSX.
4. Go to KDCA airport. Takeoff and Have FUN !!

I would welcome any feedback, ideas, suggestions, or collaboration on this project.

Enjoy,
Larry

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D scenery
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place scenery in Addon Scenery

Create a folder under FSX\Addon Scenery\ containing scenery and texture sub-folders.
  3. Activate in Scenery Library

In FSX, go to Settings → Scenery Library → Add Area. Higher priority means it overrides lower entries for the same location.
  4. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
