Fix a failed MSFS 2024 installation on PC, Xbox Series X|S or PS5 with clear steps for stuck downloads, storage, licences and package errors.
To fix a failed Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 installation, first identify whether the platform launcher, the first-launch package download or optional content is failing. Then free space on both destination and system drives, restart the launcher, verify account ownership, repair platform services, remove conflicting beta files and retry on a stable connection.
Which part of the MSFS 2024 installation failed?
The right fix depends on where installation stops; reinstalling the entire simulator is rarely the best first step.
| Symptom | Likely failure | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store, Xbox app, Steam or console queue will not download the game | Platform launcher, account, storage or licence problem | Repair the launcher, confirm ownership and check both drives for space |
| The game opens but fails while downloading or unpacking data | Packages path, permissions, connection or damaged partial download | Check InstalledPackagesPath, security software and free space |
| Every launch requests the same mandatory update | Update loop or incorrect package location | Repair the package path and clear the platform's failed update state |
| Only one aircraft, activity or scenery package fails | Optional content rather than the base installation | Remove and redownload that item instead of reinstalling MSFS |
How do I repair a failed MSFS 2024 installation on PC?
On PC, work through these steps in order and retry after each material change.
- Record the failure stage and error code. An error shown by Microsoft Store, the Xbox app or Steam belongs to that platform layer. A failure after the MSFS splash screen usually concerns the simulator's packages, connection or content folders.
- Restart Windows and the launcher. Finish pending Windows and launcher updates, then sign in with the account that owns MSFS 2024 or holds the relevant subscription. A mistake we see constantly is using one account in Microsoft Store and another in the Xbox app without checking which account owns the licence.
- Check free space on both drives. Keep working space available on the installation drive and the Windows system drive, because downloaded files may be cached or unpacked before reaching their final location. Emptying a few gigabytes only on the destination drive may not solve a space error.
- Repair the platform services. For a Microsoft Store or Xbox app installation, use Windows' repair options for the Store, Xbox app and Gaming Services before choosing Reset. Resetting can sign you out and discard cached download state. Our Xbox app and Gaming Services repair sequence covers the relevant PC checks. On Steam, clear its download cache, restart Steam and verify the installed files once enough of the base game exists for verification.
- Verify the packages folder. If MSFS reaches its own downloader, close the simulator and inspect
UserCfg.opt. ItsInstalledPackagesPathentry must point to an existing, writable folder with sufficient space. Correct the path rather than creating nested duplicate folders, and do not point MSFS 2024 at an old MSFS 2020OfficialorCommunitytree. - Remove beta conflicts. If this PC previously used an Insider, preview or beta build, stale files or the wrong entitlement can send the installer to an obsolete package location. Follow our steps for clearing preview files and beta installation conflicts rather than deleting folders at random.
- Test the connection without intermediaries. Pause VPNs, proxies and aggressive web-filtering tools, use Ethernet if practical and permit MSFS and its launcher through the firewall. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection; add a narrow exception only when security software is demonstrably blocking the installer.
- Keep add-ons out of the first launch. Rename or temporarily empty the MSFS 2024
Communityfolder. Do not copy an entire MSFS 2020 add-on collection into it unless each developer identifies the add-on as compatible with MSFS 2024.
How do I fix installation on Xbox or PlayStation?
On consoles, failed installations are usually resolved by clearing the partial queue, checking storage and refreshing the account licence.
- Confirm that the console is supported. MSFS 2024 installs on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro. There is no native Xbox One or PlayStation 4 installation.
- Restart the console fully. Use a complete shutdown or restart rather than leaving the machine in standby, then install any pending system software update.
- Inspect the download queue. Pause other games and updates. If MSFS fails repeatedly at exactly the same point, cancel it, restart the console and remove the incomplete installation before starting a fresh download.
- Use suitable storage. Install to internal storage or supported high-speed expansion intended for native console games, not general USB storage. Leave extra space for temporary installation data and later content updates.
- Refresh the licence. Sign in with the purchasing or subscription account. On PS5, use the console's restore-licences function if MSFS appears purchased but cannot be downloaded. On Xbox, check the game and add-on management screen to confirm that the base game is selected.
- Rule out a network interruption. Restart the router, avoid simultaneous large downloads and try a wired connection where possible. Cloud-play sessions do not install the simulator locally, so local storage fixes do not apply to cloud streaming.
Why does the installer keep failing at the same percentage?
A failure at the same percentage usually points to a damaged cached chunk, a storage write problem or one package that cannot be unpacked.
Check whether network or disk activity is still continuing before force-closing the installer; verification can leave the progress display unchanged. If activity has stopped for a sustained period, restart the platform, clear its download cache or partial queue, and retry with more free space. Failures at varying percentages are more often caused by an unstable connection or interrupted online session.
If the base installation finishes but every launch sends you back for the same update, use the dedicated mandatory-update loop recovery steps. That problem is different from an initial platform download failure.
Which installation mistakes make the problem worse?
The most damaging fixes are manual deletions made before identifying which installation layer has failed.
- Do not take ownership of or delete protected
WindowsAppsorWpSystemfolders merely to clear a failed download; this can break Store permissions for other games. - Do not erase the complete packages directory when only one optional package has failed.
- Do not alternate between purchasing, subscription and secondary accounts during troubleshooting.
- Do not repeatedly change the installation destination without correcting
InstalledPackagesPath; this can leave several incomplete package trees. - Do not assume uninstalling the small platform application has removed a large custom packages folder.
Should I uninstall and reinstall MSFS 2024?
Reinstall only after account, storage, launcher and package-path repairs have failed.
On PC, first reinstall the platform application while preserving a known-good packages folder; this tests the executable layer without redownloading everything. Before a clean removal, back up the Community folder and any hand-edited files. Cloud synchronisation may restore account-linked settings and purchases, but it does not protect local add-ons or every customised file.
For a complete reset, follow our platform-specific clean reinstall procedure. It explains what to remove on Microsoft Store, Steam, Xbox and PlayStation without blindly deleting unrelated simulator data.
