To improve contrails in Microsoft Flight Simulator, render at native resolution, use TAA or DLAA instead of aggressive DLSS/FSR performance modes, raise volumetric cloud quality if your GPU allows, and test without conflicting visual-effect add-ons. If contrails are missing rather than rough, check the aircraft, altitude and effect package first.
Which graphics settings make MSFS contrails clearer?
Native-resolution anti-aliasing has the greatest effect on thin, translucent contrails in both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024. Setting names and availability vary by hardware, but the same priorities apply.
- Use native resolution as the baseline. Select your display's native resolution and set Render Scaling to 100 when that control is available. Rendering above 100 can produce cleaner edges, but its performance cost is too high to be the first remedy.
- Start with TAA or DLAA. TAA is a reliable baseline, while DLAA can give better native-resolution results when supported. If you need DLSS or FSR for frame rate, choose a quality-focused mode; Performance and Ultra Performance modes are more likely to break up narrow trails.
- Raise Volumetric Clouds carefully. A higher cloud setting can improve how contrails blend into the surrounding atmosphere and intersect cloud layers. It does not directly increase the trail's length, density or persistence.
- Reduce blur and excessive sharpening. Motion blur can smear a trail while panning, while strong sharpening produces bright outlines and flickering edges. Change one control at a time and compare from the same external-camera position.

Why do contrails look pixelated, smeared or broken?
Most broken contrails result from a low internal rendering resolution, temporal upscaling or an aircraft-specific effect rather than texture quality.

Why are contrails missing in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Missing contrails usually mean the aircraft or effect is not active under the test conditions, rather than that the graphics settings are too low.
- Test a default jet first. Third-party aircraft may supply their own effects, and an older aircraft package can lose compatibility after a simulator update.
- Use a normal airliner cruise altitude. Contrail activation can depend on altitude, temperature and the aircraft's effect logic. A low-altitude test does not prove the feature is broken.
- Remove visual-effect conflicts. Disable Community-folder weather, particle and contrail packages, restart the simulator, then test again. Clearing scenery caches is unlikely to help because contrails are not scenery.
- Check your own aircraft. Remote multiplayer and AI aircraft can use different models, effects or distance culling, so they are not reliable as the only test case.
Do not confuse engine contrails with aerodynamic condensation. Contrails extend from engine exhaust at altitude; short vapour sheets over wings in humid, high-lift conditions are separate effects and may not be changed by a contrail replacement.
Should I install a contrail mod?
A contrail mod is useful on PC when the stock effect's shape, density or persistence is the problem and graphics settings have already been ruled out. Choose a package made for your simulator generation—MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 are not automatically interchangeable—and check whether it changes all aircraft or only named models.
Install one effect package at a time in the Community folder and never overwrite the Official folder. Console editions cannot use arbitrary Community-folder packages, so improvement is limited to built-in display controls, simulator updates and content available through the console's supported channels. No graphics setting or visual mod can guarantee physically accurate persistence when that behaviour is fixed by the simulator or aircraft effect itself.
