How do I park at a gate and connect a jetway?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn how to park at a gate and connect a jetway in a flight simulator, with simulator-specific controls and fixes when the bridge will not move.

To park at a gate in a flight simulator, follow the stand centreline, stop at the correct nose-wheel mark or docking signal, set the parking brake and shut down the engines. Then request the jetway through ground services or use the assigned command. Both the stand and aircraft must support jetways.

What is the correct gate-parking procedure?

Correct positioning matters more than being visually close to the terminal.

  1. Choose an animated gate. Select a gate or terminal stand that has a movable passenger boarding bridge. Ramp stands, cargo stands and some decorative gates cannot provide a jetway.
  2. Follow the stand centreline. Taxi slowly and keep the nose wheel over the painted line. Follow the marshaller or visual docking guidance system when one is available.
  3. Stop at the correct mark. Use the mark for your aircraft type or obey the docking system’s stop indication. Different aircraft stop at different points; parking a regional jet on a wide-body mark can leave its door outside the bridge’s operating range.
  4. Secure the aircraft. Set the parking brake, bring the engines to idle and complete the shutdown. For a realistic turnaround, extinguish the anti-collision beacon once the engines have stopped and establish auxiliary or external power.
  5. Request the jetway once. Use the simulator’s ground-services option, assigned jetway command or scenery control panel. Wait for the bridge to finish moving before operating the aircraft door.

Do not steer towards the jetway or stop when the cockpit appears level with the terminal. The stop mark is designed to place the appropriate passenger door within the bridge’s movement envelope.

How do I connect the jetway in each simulator?

The connection method depends on the simulator and sometimes on the airport scenery.

SimulatorNormal methodMain requirement
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024Request the bridge from the Ground Services interface.Park accurately at a supported gate and complete the required shutdown steps. Our guide to the MSFS 2024 parking and ground-service sequence covers the menu and operating order.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020Select the jetway request from the ground-service options available at the stand. The gate, aircraft door definition and installed scenery must be compatible. Use these MSFS 2020 jetway fault checks if no service appears or the bridge remains still.
FSXPress Ctrl+J at a compatible gate.Advanced Animations must be enabled, and the aircraft must be within range. See our FSX positioning and Ctrl+J guidance for the usual failure points.
X-Plane 12Use the assigned jetway command or the airport scenery’s control method.Native and plug-in-controlled bridges may use different commands. Our explanation of X-Plane 12 native and plug-in jetways shows how to identify which system controls the bridge.
Other simulatorsUse the native ground-service menu, a mapped command or the scenery add-on’s panel.A visible jetway may be a static scenery object rather than an animated service.

Custom airports and ground-service add-ons can replace the simulator’s native control. Do not send the same jetway command through two systems: competing native and add-on instructions can produce duplicate bridges, failed movement or poor alignment.

Why will the jetway not connect?

A jetway usually fails because the aircraft is outside its docking range, the stand is not animated or a service condition has not been met.

  • Wrong parking position: use an external view to check the nose wheel against the centreline and stop mark. Even a small lateral error can put the door beyond the bridge’s reach.
  • Wrong type of stand: a gate label does not guarantee an operable bridge. Some jetways are static scenery, while remote and cargo stands may deliberately have none.
  • Aircraft not secured: set the parking brake and stop the engines. If the service still refuses, switch off the beacon and make sure no pushback is active.
  • Unsupported aircraft door: the model may lack a correctly defined passenger exit or use a door the native bridge cannot reach. This is common with unusual aircraft dimensions and some add-on models.
  • Scenery conflict: duplicate airport scenery can place two gates in the same location or leave the service point offset from the visible stand.
  • Control conflict: a ground-handling add-on may own the jetway while the native simulator is also trying to control it. Use one system for the entire turnaround.
  • Unassigned command: check the control bindings if the keyboard or controller input produces no response, particularly after changing a control profile.

To isolate the cause, test the same aircraft at another known animated gate, then test a default aircraft at the original gate. If only one aircraft fails, suspect its door configuration; if every aircraft fails at one airport, suspect the scenery or stand.

Can I connect a jetway with the engines running?

Some simulators allow it, but the correct operating sequence is to set the parking brake, stop the engines and extinguish the beacon before moving the jetway.

Add-ons may enforce those conditions and refuse to connect while an engine, pushback tug or anti-collision light is active. The passenger door should normally remain closed until the bridge has docked; the jetway command itself does not necessarily open or close the aircraft door.

What should I do before pushback?

Close the passenger door, retract the jetway fully and remove other ground equipment before requesting pushback.

Never move the aircraft while the bridge is attached, even if the simulator does not model collision damage. Wait until it has parked against the terminal, then begin the normal beacon, engine-start and parking-brake sequence requested by the tug or ground crew.
