For MSFS 2024, Strata WX is the better choice if your priority is route-wide real-world weather, while REX Atmos is better for hands-on atmospheric styling and custom scenarios. Which REX product is the fair comparison?
Strata WX should be compared with REX Atmos, not REX Weather Force 2020. The REX name covers distinct products, and compatibility with one does not establish compatibility with another.
Weather Force was developed for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. An installer opening or SimConnect establishing a connection does not mean that its weather injection works correctly in MSFS 2024. Neither product replaces the simulator's cloud renderer. It supplies or adjusts the weather parameters that MSFS 2024 then depicts, so an add-on cannot guarantee a specific cloud shape or perfectly reproduce every layer reported by a station.
Which weather add-on should you choose?
Choose according to how you fly rather than which screenshots look most dramatic.
- Choose Strata WX when you want the controller to follow real-world conditions with minimal intervention during a complete route.
- Choose REX Atmos when cloud arrangement, haze, visibility and repeatable custom situations matter more than automatic route weather.
- Keep MSFS 2024 Live Weather when you want the lowest-maintenance option, native integration or console support. Many simmers do not need an external engine.
- Avoid Weather Force 2020 for a new MSFS 2024 setup unless REX explicitly identifies the exact installed product build as supporting that simulator.

Can Strata WX and REX run together?
No—do not let Strata WX and a REX weather mode control conditions simultaneously. Two controllers can repeatedly overwrite cloud, pressure, visibility and wind values, producing sudden transitions, clear skies, frozen weather or conditions that revert every few seconds.
Turn off MSFS Live Weather when the selected add-on instructs you to use a custom or injected weather mode. A separate REX visual feature should only be combined with Strata if its documentation explicitly confirms that it does not write weather variables.
Why might the injected weather not match the METAR?
A station METAR is a point observation, not a complete three-dimensional model of the atmosphere. Differences do not automatically mean that Strata WX or REX is broken.
- A report can be older than the conditions visible outside, particularly during fast-moving weather.
- Cloud layers, haze and precipitation must be translated into the weather parameters MSFS accepts.
- Conditions between reporting stations are interpolated rather than observed directly.

What should you check when the weather add-on does not work?
- Confirm the exact product. REX Atmos and Weather Force are not interchangeable names.
- Verify MSFS 2024 support. Use a controller build explicitly intended for the simulator and its installed Sim Update.
- Select one weather source. Close the competing controller and disable native Live Weather if the add-on requires an injected preset.
- Check time and data. Compare the same station, UTC time and report age before judging accuracy.
- Restart the connection cleanly. Close the controller and simulator, then relaunch them in the order specified by the add-on. Firewall blocking and mismatched administrator privileges commonly prevent SimConnect-based tools from attaching.
Our practical recommendation is Strata WX for automated real-world flying and REX Atmos for deliberate visual control. For most users choosing purely on weather behaviour rather than atmosphere design, Strata WX is the stronger MSFS 2024 purchase.
