Go PROBaltimore, Washington’s northern suburbs and the broad waters of Chesapeake Bay define this compact east–west sheet. Coverage runs from the Virginia and Maryland suburbs west of the capital through the Baltimore metropolitan area, then crosses the bay to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also reaches north beyond Baltimore and south across the central Chesapeake approaches.
The landscape changes markedly across the chart. The western portion lies across rolling Piedmont country, becoming more heavily developed towards the Washington–Baltimore corridor. Baltimore and its surrounding suburbs form the principal urban concentration, while the Chesapeake introduces an intricate mix of open water, tidal rivers, inlets and low-lying shoreline. East of the bay, flatter agricultural ground and dispersed settlements give the Eastern Shore a distinctly different visual character. As a helicopter route chart with no adjoining sheet of the same type, it presents this busy metropolitan and coastal region as a single, self-contained area.
