Flight Simulator X Prepar3D

Enhance your virtual hangar with this freeware Lockheed P-38 Lightning model developed by David C. Copley. First conceived in 1937 by the US Army Air Force to fulfill a critical need for a high-altitude fighter, the P-38 quickly gained recognition for its distinctive twin-boom structure and potent firepower centered in the nose. This particular adaptation is tailored for Microsoft Flight Simulator X and showcases textures by Mark “Fire Ball” Rooks of RSDG Aircraft, along with a dedicated panel by Mel Mutter. Inside, you will find historical references and period photography that underscore the aircraft’s operational heritage.

Technical Glimpse of the P-38 Lightning

This fighter emerged from Lockheed’s first foray into military designs, with the prototype XP-38 launching in January 1939. Formal production variants, such as the P-38D, established a lethal front armament configuration that combined a 37 mm cannon with four 12.7 mm machine guns. Pilots often noted the aircraft’s strong climb rate, which was further enhanced by its turbo-supercharged twin engines. In both European and Pacific operations, the P-38 served admirably due to its range and high-altitude capabilities.

Key Add-On Highlights

  • Accurate Model: Reproduction of the P-38’s signature dual-boom airframe as originally engineered by David C. Copley.
  • Distinctive Panel: Integration of Mel Mutter’s cockpit panel for an immersive instrument layout true to the era.
  • Authentic Textures: Paint and markings crafted by Mark “Fire Ball” Rooks, conveying a historically inspired color scheme.
  • Visual Documentation: Supplemental imagery and documentation included, offering additional insight into real-world P-38 operations.
