Learn X-Plane G530 knob click and scroll controls for inner and outer rings, push actions, precise data entry and common mouse-wheel fixes.
In X-Plane, place the pointer over the G530 knob ring you want to turn. In click mode, click the left or right rotation hotspot one detent at a time; in scroll mode, roll the mouse wheel while the pointer remains over that ring. Click the knob’s centre to perform its push action.
Click mode versus scroll mode
The standard desktop X-Plane G530 accepts both methods without requiring a setting inside the Garmin unit. They are alternative ways of rotating the same virtual knob, not navigation modes.

The basic method is the same in the standard G530 supplied with desktop X-Plane 11 and X-Plane 12. An aircraft with custom avionics may define its own click, drag or scroll manipulators.
How do I select the inner or outer G530 knob?
The pointer must be over the correct part of the concentric knob before you click or scroll.
- Move over the knob slowly. Watch for the pointer or rotation symbol to change as it crosses each active area.
- Select the outer ring. Position the pointer near the edge of the larger collar. This is the easiest hotspot to miss.
- Select the inner ring. Move onto the smaller central knob, but not directly onto its push hotspot.
- Rotate it. Click the appropriate side for one detent, or leave the pointer in place and use the wheel for several detents.
- Press it when required. Move to the centre and left-click. Scrolling will not perform the push action.
If the aircraft provides a larger G530 pop-up, use it for flight-plan entry. The enlarged bezel makes the overlapping inner, outer and push hotspots much easier to separate.
Which G530 knob controls pages and characters?
The left and right concentric knobs perform different jobs, while the right knob changes behaviour when its cursor is active.
- Left outer knob: changes the MHz portion of the standby COM or VLOC frequency.
- Left inner knob: changes the smaller frequency steps. Pressing it switches the tuning cursor between the COM and VLOC fields.
- Right outer knob with the cursor off: moves between page groups.
- Right inner knob with the cursor off: selects a page within the chosen group.
- Right outer knob with the cursor on: usually moves the highlight between fields or characters.
- Right inner knob with the cursor on: changes the highlighted value or character. Pressing this knob toggles the cursor.
Many entries still require ENT to accept the displayed choice. If the right knob only changes pages when you expected to edit a field, press its centre to activate the cursor first. Why does the mouse wheel zoom instead of turning the G530 knob?
X-Plane zooms the view when the pointer is not inside an active G530 manipulator, so unexpected zoom usually means the knob hotspot was missed.
- Stop scrolling and move the pointer until its symbol changes over the knob.
- Move towards the outer edge if X-Plane keeps selecting the inner ring.
- Use the G530 pop-up where available, especially on a high-resolution display.
- Use individual clicks if a smooth-scroll mouse or trackpad sends too many inputs.

Why does the G530 respond but the aircraft ignore the route?
Working knobs only confirm that the route was entered; they do not arm the autopilot or select GPS guidance. Check that the intended leg is active, the navigation source is set to GPS rather than VLOC, and the autopilot is using the appropriate navigation mode.

What if a third-party aircraft uses different knob controls?
Custom aircraft can replace X-Plane’s standard G530 bezel or manipulators, even when the screen looks familiar. If scrolling consistently operates the wrong ring, no rotation pointer appears, or the knob requires dragging, use that aircraft’s supplied control method; the default G530 hotspots cannot override a custom cockpit implementation.
