To move freely around the cockpit in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, use Freelook to turn your head and the cockpit camera translation controls to shift the pilot’s eyepoint up, down, left, right, forward or backward. For unrestricted movement beyond the cockpit camera’s limits, switch to Drone Camera or, in supported aircraft, Character mode.

Which cockpit camera mode should I use?

The correct mode depends on whether you want to look, reposition the pilot’s head or leave the normal cockpit viewpoint entirely.

How do I set up cockpit movement controls?

Bind separate controls for looking and translating because Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 treats them as different camera actions.

  1. Select the correct input device. Open the Controls settings, choose your keyboard, mouse, controller or joystick, and confirm that you are editing the profile actually loaded for that device.
  2. Bind Freelook. Search the control list for Freelook and assign either its directional axes or a hold/toggle command. A mouse, right analogue stick or joystick hat works well.
  3. Bind cockpit translation. Search for cockpit camera translation actions and assign movement up, down, left, right, forward and backward. Labels can vary slightly between control profiles, but searching for Translate Cockpit View should expose the individual directions.
  4. Add a reset command. Bind Reset Cockpit View so one input returns you to the normal pilot eyepoint if you become displaced or disorientated.
  5. Save a custom profile. Avoid changing a protected default preset if the simulator prompts you to create a duplicate. Test the controls while parked before using them in flight.

On a controller, we recommend placing translation commands behind a modifier button rather than assigning them directly to an axis used for flying. Why can I look around but not move my head?

You are using Freelook rather than cockpit translation if the view turns but remains fixed in one position.

  • Search with the filter set to show all controls. An “assigned” filter hides translation commands that have no binding.
  • Check the selected device and profile. A binding added to the keyboard profile will not appear on a controller, and changing aircraft or presets can expose a different active profile.
  • Remove conflicting assignments. If one button operates Freelook, cockpit interaction and translation, the simulator may execute the wrong action or none at all.
  • Check head tracking or VR. An active tracking device can continually replace the camera position. Pause tracking or recentre the VR view before diagnosing ordinary cockpit controls.
  • Leave mouse interaction mode. When the pointer is capturing a knob, lever or display, mouse movement may operate that control instead of the camera.

Why does cockpit movement stop at an invisible boundary?

Cockpit translation is deliberately constrained by the aircraft’s camera definition and interior model, so it is not a completely free camera.

Those limits vary between aircraft. Some let you move through much of the flight deck, while others keep the eyepoint close to the pilot’s seat or stop it at a bulkhead. This is not usually a failed binding.

How do I keep my preferred cockpit position?

Use a saved custom cockpit view for positions you revisit regularly, such as a higher landing view, a close instrument view or a seat aligned with the HUD.

Move the eyepoint first, save it to an available custom-camera slot, and bind commands for loading that slot. Saved cockpit views remain more useful than Drone Camera positions because they retain normal cockpit interaction and move with the aircraft. If a saved view appears wrong, reset to the default pilot view, reposition it and overwrite the slot rather than stacking further movements onto an already displaced camera.
