How do I set up AIG Traffic Controller in MSFS 2020?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Set up AIG Traffic Controller in MSFS 2020, connect through SimConnect, prevent duplicate traffic and fix missing or generic aircraft.

To set up AIG Traffic Controller in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, install the AI aircraft, liveries and flight plans through AIG AI Manager, configure Traffic Controller to use that library, disable the simulator’s own AI traffic, load a flight, then connect and inject through SimConnect. This setup is PC-only.

Traffic Controller is the injector, not the aircraft library. Running it without installing compatible models, liveries and AIG flight plans through AI Manager usually produces no traffic or generic substitutes.

What does AIG Traffic Controller need?

AIG Traffic Controller needs the Windows PC edition of MSFS 2020, a working AIG AI Manager installation and at least one installed airline or flight-plan package.

  • AIG AI Manager: installs and maintains the models, liveries and flight plans.
  • OCI library: stores the content installed through AIG’s One Click Installer system.
  • AIG Traffic Controller: reads the installed schedules and injects aircraft into MSFS through SimConnect.

It cannot be installed on Xbox because the console cannot run the external Traffic Controller application or use its PC add-on library.

How do I configure AIG Traffic Controller for MSFS 2020?

  1. Extract both AIG applications. Give AI Manager and Traffic Controller their own permanent, writable folders. Do not run them from compressed archives or place their executable files inside the MSFS Community folder.
  2. Configure AI Manager for MSFS 2020. Select Microsoft Flight Simulator as the simulator and check that the detected package or Community location is correct. Microsoft Store, Steam and custom installations can use different paths, so copying somebody else’s path is a common mistake.
  3. Create and populate the OCI library. Choose a location with adequate free space, then install the required airlines and flight plans. Our complete OCI installation sequence for AIG models, liveries and schedules covers this part in detail.
  4. Link Traffic Controller to the existing AIG data. Open its settings and select MSFS 2020. If the installed build requests an AI Manager, OCI or flight-plan location, point it to the library already created by AI Manager rather than creating a second copy. Run the available setup or verification scan.
  5. Prepare MSFS traffic settings. Turn off the simulator’s built-in AI or real-time airline traffic before injection. Also remove competing traffic injectors from the session.
  6. Load a flight and connect. Enter the cockpit at the intended airport, allow the flight to finish loading, then start or return to Traffic Controller. Wait for its SimConnect status to show a connection and use the displayed start or inject control. Keep Traffic Controller running during the flight.

MSFS 2020 already provides the SimConnect interface used by the controller, so a separate legacy SimConnect installation is not normally required.

Which MSFS 2020 traffic settings prevent duplicates?

Set MSFS 2020’s own airline traffic to off and its ground-aircraft density to zero when AIG Traffic Controller is supplying the traffic.

  • Aircraft Traffic Type: select Off, rather than Real-Time Online or AI Offline.
  • Ground Aircraft Density: set it to 0; these static aircraft otherwise occupy gates and duplicate AIG aeroplanes.
  • Generic AI models: turn them off when the AIG model library is complete and you want the assigned airline models and liveries displayed.
  • Multiplayer: optional, but other players can resemble duplicate traffic and are not controlled by AIG.

Airport workers and service vehicles do not create duplicate airliners, though high settings can increase congestion and processor load. Our MSFS traffic-settings checklist for external injectors explains the interaction with the simulator’s own traffic system.

Does AIG Traffic Controller provide live traffic?

AIG’s core traffic system follows installed airline schedules rather than guaranteeing a second-by-second match with real aircraft positions.

Traffic therefore depends on the installed flight plans, airport, simulated day and time. Changing the simulator time substantially after injection can leave an outdated traffic set; stop and reinject it after the time change. Any additional data mode offered by a particular Traffic Controller build should not be confused with the standard AIGFP schedule system.

Why is AIG Traffic Controller not showing traffic?

The controller remains disconnected

A disconnected status usually means MSFS has not finished loading a flight, the wrong simulator target was selected or the AIG components are incompatible with one another. Load into the cockpit, confirm MSFS 2020 is selected, close and reopen the controller, and use compatible AI Manager and Traffic Controller releases.

If the applications were moved after configuration, correct their stored library paths. Avoid running one copy from an old extracted folder while AI Manager points to another.

It connects, but no aircraft appear

A successful SimConnect connection does not prove that traffic packages are installed. Verify that AI Manager contains active flight plans and aircraft packages, then test at a major airport and a time covered by those schedules. Check that injection is running and that maximum-aircraft or radius settings have not been reduced to zero.

Aircraft use generic models or blank liveries

Generic or unpainted aircraft indicate a missing model, missing texture, failed package installation or unresolved model assignment. Run AI Manager’s verification or update process and remove conflicting duplicate traffic packages. Our model-and-livery checks for real airline AI aircraft cover the usual causes.

Every flight appears twice

Duplicates mean another traffic source is still active. Recheck Aircraft Traffic Type, Ground Aircraft Density, multiplayer traffic and any other injector running in the background. Use one injector at a time, even if several products share some of the same AIG models.

Performance drops at large airports

Injected aircraft consume processor time even when they are parked. Reduce the injection radius, maximum active aircraft and parked-aircraft count before lowering unrelated graphics settings. Dense hubs also benefit from conservative airport-vehicle settings and zero simulator-generated ground aircraft.
