Why is VATSIM the best free ATC software?
VATSIM wins for realism because another person can react to traffic, weather and pilot requests instead of following a fixed script.
- Controllers can issue vectors, holds, speed restrictions, approach changes and traffic sequencing.
- Both IFR and VFR operations are supported, subject to local procedures and controller coverage.
- Compatible traffic models can display other network pilots as appropriate aircraft types and liveries.
- Access does not require a subscription, although registration and compliance with the network’s rules are required.
The drawback is availability. An airport may have full delivery-to-centre coverage during an event and no controller at all several hours later. When nobody is online, pilots use the network’s advisory frequency or published local procedure rather than receiving automated control.
Human controllers direct connected network pilots, not the simulator’s ordinary AI traffic. Leaving built-in AI or public multiplayer traffic enabled can therefore produce duplicate aircraft and conflicts that the controller cannot see.
When is IVAO a better choice?

What is the best free offline ATC?
The built-in ATC supplied with Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX or Prepar3D is usually the safest no-cost offline choice.
It is always available and requires no microphone, account or live controller. It is adequate for basic clearances and casual flights, but automated ATC can choose unsuitable runways, mishandle complex procedures, issue premature descents or continue following an old route after the flight management system has been changed.
A mistake we see constantly in Microsoft Flight Simulator is editing the route only in the aircraft’s FMS after loading a different plan through the simulator. Built-in ATC may continue using the originally filed route. Keep the simulator’s flight plan, avionics route and intended runway aligned before requesting clearance.
Older freeware ATC plug-ins may still work with the simulator generation for which they were built, but many rely on obsolete interfaces or unsupported voice components. Confirm explicit support for your simulator version before installing one; a plug-in advertised for an older X-Plane or FSX release should not be assumed to work with a newer platform.
How do I set up free online ATC?
A clean setup requires the correct pilot client, working push-to-talk audio and traffic configured so that only network aircraft appear.
- Choose the network: compare coverage at the airports and UTC times when you normally fly.
- Install the matching client: use the client or simulator plug-in intended for your exact simulator and operating system.
- Configure voice: select the microphone and headset explicitly, assign a push-to-talk button and test it before connecting.

- Prepare the flight: use the correct callsign, file a valid flight plan and connect while parked at a stand, never on a runway.

Why can free ATC appear not to work?
Most faults come from radio, audio or flight-plan configuration rather than the ATC network itself.
- No controller answers: confirm that a controller is actually online for your airspace. A connected network does not guarantee staffed ATC.
- You can hear but cannot transmit: check push-to-talk, microphone selection, the active COM radio and the tuned frequency.
- Other aircraft are invisible: repair the model-matching or traffic package; this is separate from the network connection.
- ATC has the wrong route: verify that the flight plan was filed under the same callsign used by the pilot client.
- Aircraft appear twice: turn off the simulator’s unrelated AI or multiplayer traffic source.
- The client stopped connecting after an update: update the pilot client or plug-in and confirm that security software has not blocked it.
Does free ATC software work on Xbox or PlayStation?
No, VATSIM and IVAO pilot clients do not run directly on the console versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator.
