Fix MSFS 2024’s “server issue detected” error with ordered checks for outages, sign-in, Online Functionality, network faults and rolling cache.
The “server issue detected” error in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 means the simulator cannot complete a connection to Microsoft’s online services. Rule out an outage first; then restart the simulator and router, check Online Functionality, refresh your platform sign-in, remove VPN or filtering interference, and rebuild the rolling cache before reinstalling.
Is the MSFS 2024 server issue local or server-side?
A widespread service outage cannot be repaired on your PC or console, while an error confined to one account, device or network usually can. Check the service status reported by Microsoft/Xbox and your platform, but also compare the symptoms below.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Many players receive the error at the same time | Microsoft service outage or maintenance | Stop changing local settings and retry later |
| The error disappears on a mobile hotspot | Home router, DNS, ISP or network filtering | Restart the router and test filters or security settings |
| Steam repeatedly asks to connect to Xbox | Expired or mismatched Microsoft/Xbox authentication | Refresh the account sign-in |
| The main menu works, but streamed scenery or multiplayer does not | Online Functionality, bandwidth or a partial service fault | Check the affected online feature rather than reinstalling |
A successful console or Windows network test proves that the device has internet access; it does not prove that the simulator can reach every Microsoft service it needs.
How do I fix the “server issue detected” error?
Work through these fixes in order and test after each one, because changing several account and network settings together makes the actual cause harder to identify.
- Fully close Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. On Xbox, use Quit rather than leaving it in Quick Resume. On PS5, close the game instead of merely returning to the home screen. On PC, exit both the simulator and its platform launcher, then restart the device.
- Rule out an active outage. Check the service-status information for Microsoft/Xbox and your platform. If an outage is acknowledged, waiting is the correct fix; deleting caches, changing passwords or reinstalling will not restore a failed remote service.
- Restart and isolate the connection. Disconnect the router from power for about a minute, reconnect it and use Ethernet where practical. A brief mobile-hotspot test is useful: if sign-in works there, investigate the home router, DNS configuration, ISP or network filtering. Do not fly over a hotspot for longer than necessary because MSFS 2024 streams substantial amounts of data.
- Refresh the correct account sign-in. For Microsoft Store or Xbox app installations, confirm that the intended accounts are signed in and that the game entitlement is visible. Steam owners still need a valid Microsoft/Xbox identity inside the simulator; use our Steam-to-Xbox connection checks if that sign-in loops. On Xbox or PS5, verify the active console profile and linked Microsoft account. Do not unlink accounts casually, as relinking restrictions may apply.
- Enable Online Functionality. If you can reach the settings, confirm that Online Functionality and the required online data options are enabled and saved. Our guide to MSFS online settings covers the relevant controls. A greyed-out option may indicate platform privacy controls, parental restrictions or an unavailable service.
- Remove connection interference. Temporarily disconnect VPNs and proxies, and test without DNS-level content filtering or router security filtering. On PC, allow the simulator, its launcher and Xbox services through the firewall. Do not permanently disable security software or open random router ports; use a short test to identify the blocker, then add the narrowest necessary exception.
- Update the platform components. Install pending simulator, operating-system and launcher updates. On Windows, also update the Xbox app, Microsoft Store components and Gaming Services. If Gaming Services appears damaged, use Windows’ app repair option before Reset, then reboot; Reset may remove local app state and require another sign-in.
- Rebuild the rolling cache. Do this only if the main menu works and the error appears when online world data starts loading. Delete the rolling cache through the simulator’s data or online settings, restart MSFS 2024 and create a fresh cache if you use one. Do not delete cloud saves, console reserved data or installed packages as a substitute.
What if only streamed scenery or multiplayer is broken?
If the main menu loads, basic account authentication has probably succeeded and the fault may affect only one online service. A low-detail world, stalled streaming or a bandwidth warning calls for the more specific MSFS 2024 bandwidth and rolling-cache checks.
If live world data works but other aircraft do not appear, check multiplayer status, server-region selection and platform privacy permissions instead. Our multiplayer connection troubleshooting covers those separate failure points.
Will reinstalling Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 fix it?
Reinstalling rarely fixes a “server issue detected” message because the usual causes are an outage, an expired account token or a blocked connection rather than damaged aircraft and scenery packages. Use the platform’s verify or repair function first, and reinstall only when package corruption or failed updates produce additional local errors.
If the error persists across several networks but follows one account, record the exact message, platform, approximate time with time zone, and whether another account works on the same device. That pattern points to an account-side fault and gives support far more useful evidence than a full reinstall.
