What flying skills can Microsoft Flight Simulator teach?
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 are most useful for learning repeatable procedures and understanding how the parts of a flight fit together. Their value depends on the aircraft model, control setup and quality of your practice.

MSFS can also build familiarity with aviation terminology and cockpit workload. Its built-in ATC may issue unrealistic instructions, however, so it should not be treated as an authoritative source for radio phraseology or local procedures.
Can MSFS teach you to fly a real aeroplane by itself?
No. A simulator cannot determine whether you can safely operate a real aircraft, and it cannot replace instruction from a qualified flight instructor.
The missing element is not simply motion. A real instructor detects fixation, poor lookout, weak decision-making and unsafe control habits that the simulator may never flag. Real flying also introduces vibration, control loading, weather uncertainty, traffic, stress and consequences that are difficult to reproduce at home.
Aircraft fidelity varies too. A well-modelled trainer can reproduce procedures closely, but stall behaviour, ground handling, trim response, braking and engine performance may not match the real aircraft precisely. Use the simulator to rehearse a lesson, then let the instructor teach the real-world sight pictures and control feel.
How should a beginner use Microsoft Flight Simulator for training?
The best approach is to practise one defined skill at a time in a simple training aircraft. Unstructured flying is entertaining, but it tends to reinforce shortcuts rather than technique.
- Choose a basic trainer. Start with a light piston aircraft such as a Cessna 152- or 172-type model. Beginning in an airliner adds automation and systems before basic aircraft control is secure.
- Calibrate the controls. Remove unintended inputs and add only enough dead zone to stop noisy hardware from moving the controls. Excessive sensitivity or large dead zones encourage over-controlling.
- Remove control-changing assists. Turn off aids that operate the aircraft for you. Navigation labels or a taxi ribbon can remain while learning an unfamiliar airport, but they should not replace looking outside and reading signs.

- Practise a measurable exercise. Hold an assigned altitude, heading and airspeed, or fly repeated circuits using the same configuration points. Change only one variable at a time.

- Debrief every flight. Record where altitude, airspeed or alignment started to drift. Repeat that part rather than resetting immediately whenever something goes wrong.
A mistake we see constantly is spending the whole flight looking at the panel. For visual flying, remain in the cockpit view, set a sensible eye position and keep most of the scan outside. External cameras are useful for reviewing a manoeuvre, not for controlling the aircraft during training.
Pausing, teleporting and restarting just before touchdown create another weak habit: they remove the need to recognise and correct a deteriorating approach. If an approach becomes unstable, practise the go-around instead. Is Microsoft Flight Simulator better for VFR or IFR training?
MSFS generally transfers more directly to procedural IFR practice, while VFR training benefits most from route familiarisation, lookout discipline and circuit rehearsal.
Instrument procedures happen largely through instruments, radios and predictable sequences, all of which a simulator can reproduce reasonably well. It is useful for practising scans, intercepts, holds, approach briefings and missed approaches without consuming aircraft time.
For VFR, the simulator helps with landmarks, airspace awareness and approach planning, but monitor size, field of view and scenery accuracy affect what you can see. What controls do you need to learn effectively?
A joystick with a twist rudder is enough to begin, provided it is calibrated properly. A separate throttle and rudder pedals improve coordination and make procedures more transferable, but buying a full cockpit is not a prerequisite.
A yoke is appropriate when it matches the aeroplane you intend to train in, while a joystick remains perfectly usable for learning general control relationships. Accurate control and disciplined practice matter more than matching every panel component. Head tracking or VR can improve lookout and cockpit orientation, but neither replaces correct technique.
Does Microsoft Flight Simulator time count towards a pilot licence?
Ordinary time spent using Microsoft Flight Simulator at home does not count as loggable flight training towards a pilot licence. Approval normally applies to a complete training device, its configuration and the conditions under which it is used—not merely to the simulator software.
Rules differ by aviation authority and licence type, so any credit must be confirmed through an instructor or approved training organisation. Home MSFS hours are still valuable preparation: they can reduce the time spent learning cockpit layouts, checklists and procedures during paid instruction, but they are not flight time.
