Why is MSFS 2024 stuck after clicking Fly on the World Map?

Ian Stephens
In short

MSFS 2024 stuck after clicking Fly? Isolate aircraft, scenery, add-ons, cache and streaming faults with a safe fix order for PC, Xbox and PS5.

MSFS 2024 usually gets stuck after clicking Fly on the World Map because the selected aircraft or airport cannot finish loading, an add-on is incompatible, or a streaming, cache or update fault is blocking the load. Test a stock aircraft at a small default airport; the result shows whether the fault is localised or simulator-wide.

Is MSFS 2024 frozen or still loading?

A moving loading animation, changing tips or continuing storage and network activity usually means the flight is still processing or streaming data rather than completely frozen. The first flight after a simulator, aircraft or graphics update can take longer, so allow one uninterrupted control attempt.

If the flight eventually opens, follow our checks for separating slow MSFS 2024 loading from a genuine hang. If clicking Fly produces a black display while audio or controls remain active, use our separate diagnosis for MSFS 2024 black screens.

How do I fix MSFS 2024 hanging after clicking Fly?

Use the following order so that each test identifies a cause instead of changing several unrelated settings at once.

  1. Create a fresh control flight. Do not reuse a saved flight or imported plan. Select a stock aircraft with its default livery, depart from the runway at a small airport without add-on scenery, choose a clear-weather preset, and temporarily disable live traffic, live weather and multiplayer.
  2. Restart the simulator completely. Return to the operating system or console dashboard and close MSFS 2024 rather than resuming a suspended session. Reboot the PC or power-cycle the console before testing the same control flight again.
  3. Remove optional content from the test. If MSFS offers Safe Mode after the failed session, use it once. On PC, close the simulator and rename the active Community folder, then disable add-on linking tools and externally injected aircraft or scenery. On Xbox and PlayStation, disable or remove recently installed optional packages through the simulator's installed-content library.
  4. Check streamed services. Confirm that the platform account is signed in and that online functionality is enabled. Disable any VPN or proxy on PC, restart the router if other online features are also failing, and keep live services off during the control test. If many users are affected by a service outage, local reinstalls will not solve it.
  5. Rebuild the rolling cache. Delete the rolling cache from the simulator's data settings, restart MSFS 2024 and test before creating a new cache. This does not remove owned aircraft or cloud saves. Make sure the cache drive has ample free space and do not manually delete core package folders.
  6. Finish all updates. Check the platform client and the simulator's content library for pending or incomplete downloads. Confirm that the installation drive has enough free space. On PC, also install a stable graphics driver if the problem appeared after a driver change or if the loading screen becomes visually frozen.
  7. Stop external utilities on PC. Close SimConnect clients, traffic injectors, avionics companions, overlays and hardware utilities for one test. Disconnect non-essential USB devices if the hang began after adding new hardware.
  8. Repair before reinstalling. Use the platform's file-verification or repair function. Back up the Community folder and any local profiles first, and avoid options labelled reset or delete saved data unless you understand exactly what they remove.

If every stock aircraft and default airport still hangs, our complete flight-loading fault tree covers package damage, account problems, scenery conflicts and installation repair in greater depth.

Why does it happen with only one aircraft or airport?

A failure limited to one aircraft, livery, airport or route is almost always a content problem rather than a broken simulator installation.

What if the problem started after an update?

An immediate post-update hang usually means optional content no longer matches the simulator or that a package or cache update did not complete cleanly. Follow our targeted post-update loading checks before replacing the whole installation.

Keep the Community folder empty until a stock flight loads, then update and restore add-ons individually. Avoid copying an old Community folder back in one operation: one outdated aircraft, livery, airport or WASM-based component can make every later test appear to fail. Rebuild saved flights that still hang after the simulator itself works.

Should I reinstall MSFS 2024?

Reinstallation should be the last step, not the first. It will not fix an online-service outage, and PC add-ons stored outside the main installation may survive the reinstall and reproduce the same fault.

Reinstall only when stock aircraft fail at several default airports after add-ons have been disabled, the rolling cache has been rebuilt, updates are complete and file repair reports no improvement. Remove and reinstall a single suspect aircraft or scenery package before replacing the entire simulator.
