Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX all support multiple controllers on PC. A dual flight-stick or double-joystick controller setup is normally just two independent USB devices; it does not require a splitter or special adapter.
How do dual flight sticks work on a PC?
Windows and the simulator normally treat each joystick as a separate device with its own axes, buttons and control profile.
The simulator does not know which stick should be primary. If both are automatically assigned to the ailerons, for example, it receives two competing roll values. A centred stick still represents a valid axis position, and even slight sensor noise can make it take control from the stick being moved.
Two controllers do not have to be matching joysticks. The same principle applies to a joystick combined with a gamepad, throttle, yoke or rudder pedals: each analogue flight control should have one intended source unless duplication is deliberate.
How do I set up two joysticks on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC?
The reliable method is to verify each joystick in Windows, identify it inside the simulator and then remove all unwanted automatic bindings.
- Connect both devices before starting the simulator: Use direct USB ports while diagnosing the setup. If a stick disconnects or disappears, avoid an unpowered hub and test another port.
- Check Windows detection: Press
Win+R, enterjoy.cpland open each controller's properties. Move every axis and press several buttons. Both devices must appear and respond independently before the simulator can use them separately. - Identify each joystick in the simulator: Open its controls screen, select one device entry and move a physical stick. Repeat for the other device rather than relying only on their displayed names.
- Clear automatic assignments: Inspect both joysticks, any connected gamepad and every throttle mini-stick. Remove accidental pitch, roll, yaw, throttle and brake-axis bindings before creating the intended layout.
- Bind the correct type of control: Map analogue movement to an analogue axis action. Binding a joystick axis to left/right or increase/decrease commands can produce full deflection, stepping or no useful response.
- Create separate profiles: Give each profile a descriptive name such as

Identical joystick models may show the same product name even when the simulator recognises them as separate instances. Label the physical sticks, verify them by movement and keep them in consistent USB ports. A port change, driver reinstall or device reset can make some simulators associate an existing profile with the wrong instance.
Which dual-joystick layout should I use?
The best dual-joystick setup gives each analogue axis one clear owner and uses the second stick only where a spring-centred control makes sense.

Which controls should not use a spring-centred second stick?
A normal self-centring joystick is a poor choice for controls that must remain where they are placed.
Throttle, propeller, mixture, speedbrake, flap lever and helicopter collective positions usually need a lever or non-centring axis. A second stick will return them towards the middle when released unless its spring can be disabled or the simulator offers a suitable relative-input mode. Direct trim-axis assignments can cause the same problem.
Why do two joysticks fight each other?
Two joysticks fight when both are assigned to the same analogue control and the simulator receives different values from them.
- The aircraft twitches or slowly rolls: One duplicated axis is probably drifting. Search every connected device for aileron, elevator and rudder assignments before increasing dead zones.
- The throttle jumps towards the middle: A gamepad trigger, slider or joystick throttle tab may also be assigned to the throttle axis.
- The controls jump during a handover: The released stick is still active or noisy. Use an explicit verbal handover and keep the other pilot completely clear of the controls.
- An axis moves only fully left or right: It has probably been bound to directional button commands rather than the corresponding analogue axis.
- Bindings affect the wrong identical stick: Move an axis to identify the selected device, check the active profile and restore each stick to its usual USB port.
Axis arbitration differs between simulators. One may follow the most recently changing device, while another may handle competing values differently. Do not rely on that behaviour as a substitute for removing duplicate assignments.
Why does my second joystick do nothing?
If the second joystick does nothing, determine whether the failure is in Windows, the simulator's device detection or the active control profile.
- If it is absent from
joy.cpl, reconnect it directly, test another USB port and check its driver or manufacturer utility. - If Windows sees it but the simulator does not, connect it before launching the simulator and restart after any disconnection.
- If it appears but produces no control movement, verify that the correct device and profile are selected and that the intended axis actually has an assignment.
- If only buttons work, inspect the axis calibration and confirm that a controller-management utility has not hidden or combined the physical devices into one virtual controller.
- If assignments seem to be missing, change the controls filter from assigned-only to all available controls where the simulator provides that option.
Multiple-controller input support does not guarantee that force-feedback effects will work through two devices. The simulator, hardware drivers and both controllers must support the required output behaviour.
What about dual joysticks in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 can use multiple recognised controllers on PC, with bindings and control profiles managed separately for each device; console support is restricted by platform and peripheral compatibility.

Can two people fly with one joystick each?
Two people can take turns using duplicated controls, but two local joysticks do not create independent captain and first-officer stations.
Both devices remain active, so the person releasing control must stop touching the stick. Without an instructor lockout or another explicit method of transferring authority, simultaneous movement can produce an abrupt or unpredictable response.
A true shared cockpit is a separate multiplayer or add-on function that synchronises aircraft state, cockpit controls and often separate views. Connecting two joysticks to one computer does not provide those features.
Is a second joystick better than a yoke, throttle or rudder pedals?
A second joystick is the right choice when you need another spring-centred control, a two-handed HOSAS arrangement, an accessible alternative layout or local controls for a second pilot.
- Choose a throttle when engine power must remain at the selected position.
- Choose rudder pedals when you need proportional yaw and independent toe braking.
- Choose a yoke when you want conventional aeroplane pitch-and-roll control rather than another stick.
- Choose a specialised collective for helicopters when the control must hold its position after release.
