Yes. Most PC flight simulators can recognise two USB joysticks at the same time and bind each device separately. Use them for different controls, or let two people take turns, but remove duplicate pitch, roll, yaw and throttle assignments; otherwise the controllers can override each other or make the aircraft twitch.
On PC, Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX all support multiple attached controllers. Console support is more restricted: the console and simulator must recognise each exact device, and having two USB sockets does not guarantee that both joysticks will work together.
How do I set up two joysticks in a flight simulator?
Set up and test each joystick separately before assigning their final roles.
- Connect both joysticks: Plug them in before opening the simulator. If either device disconnects intermittently, bypass an unpowered USB hub and test another port.
- Check operating-system detection: Confirm that both appear in the computer’s controller panel and that their axes respond independently. If the operating system sees only one, the simulator normally cannot bind both.
- Identify each device: Identical joystick models may display the same name even though the simulator treats them as separate instances. Move an axis while watching the control screen to establish which entry belongs to which stick.
- Clear automatic assignments: New controllers are often given default pitch, roll, yaw or throttle bindings. Remove every unwanted duplicate before adding your own controls, including assignments on gamepads and throttle mini-sticks.
- Assign separate roles: Keep pitch and roll on the primary joystick. The second can control a camera, tiller, specialised aircraft function or duplicated flight controls for alternating pilots.

Why do two joysticks fight each other?
Control fighting nearly always means that the same axis is assigned to more than one device and one of them is moving, drifting or producing electrical noise.
- The aircraft moves with both sticks centred: Search every connected controller for duplicate pitch, roll, yaw and throttle axes. An unnoticed gamepad or throttle mini-stick is a common cause.
- One joystick does nothing: Confirm that it works in the operating-system controller panel, reconnect it before launching the simulator and check that the correct profile is active.
- Bindings appear on the wrong identical joystick: Keep each device in the same USB port, give its profile a descriptive name and verify it by moving an axis before editing assignments.
- Controls jump during a handover: Increase the dead zone slightly if the released joystick is noisy. If duplicated controls are not intentional, delete the second binding instead.
The way competing axes are handled varies by simulator: one may favour the latest changing input, while another may combine or switch between values. Do not rely on the software to decide which pilot is in control. Input support also does not guarantee that force-feedback effects will operate correctly on two devices.
Can two people fly with one joystick each?
Two people can take turns, but attaching two joysticks does not create independent captain and first-officer stations.
The simulator normally treats both as active local controllers. Use an explicit handover, and have the pilot releasing control keep completely clear of the stick. If both people move their controls together, the resulting aircraft response may be abrupt or unpredictable.
A true shared-cockpit system, where each pilot has an independent view and synchronised cockpit controls, is a separate multiplayer or add-on feature. Its availability depends on the simulator and aircraft; two local USB joysticks alone do not provide it.
Is a second joystick the right control to buy?
A second joystick is useful when you need another spring-centred two-axis control, an accessible alternative layout or local controls for a second person.
For conventional aircraft, another type of controller is often more useful. A throttle holds an engine-power setting, rudder pedals provide proportional yaw and toe braking, and a yoke replaces rather than supplements the main pitch-and-roll stick. For helicopters, a normal spring-centred second joystick usually makes a poor collective because it returns to the middle instead of staying where placed. It is practical only if its centring mechanism can be disabled or the simulator can interpret the axis appropriately.
