Can you download and run Microsoft Flight Simulator on a laptop?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Find out which laptops can run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or 2024, what hardware matters, and how to install it correctly.

Yes. You can download and run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or 2024 on a compatible Windows laptop. For a satisfactory local installation, look for dedicated graphics, at least 16 GB of RAM, an SSD with generous free space, good cooling and stable broadband. Thin office laptops with integrated graphics are usually a poor fit.

Which laptops can run Microsoft Flight Simulator?

A Windows gaming laptop can run Microsoft Flight Simulator well if its exact CPU, GPU and memory configuration meets the requirements for your chosen release. Do not judge it by the laptop's product name: manufacturers often sell visually identical models with very different graphics chips, RAM and storage.

Check Settings > System > About for the processor and installed RAM, then open Task Manager > Performance to identify the GPU and storage drive. Compare those details with the full hardware targets for MSFS 2020 and 2024.

ComponentWhat to look for in a laptop
GraphicsA dedicated GPU meeting the selected simulator's requirements. A mobile GPU can be slower than a desktop card with a similar name because its power limit and cooling are different.
Memory16 GB is a practical starting point; 32 GB gives MSFS 2024, complex aircraft, traffic and detailed airports more headroom.
StorageAn SSD with space for the simulator, updates, cache and add-ons. The small initial launcher is not the complete installation.
ProcessorA supported processor that can sustain performance under load. Cooling matters because thermal throttling can reduce speed during a long flight.
InternetA stable broadband connection for installation, updates and streamed world data. MSFS 2024 relies more heavily on streamed assets than MSFS 2020.

A mistake we see constantly is choosing a laptop from its RAM figure alone. The dedicated GPU, its available graphics memory, cooling system and power limit usually have a greater effect on frame rate. Our breakdown of mobile graphics, cooling and laptop upgrade limits explains how to compare machines properly.

How do you download Microsoft Flight Simulator on a laptop?

Install the simulator through the Windows PC platform associated with your purchase or subscription, then let its own installer retrieve the main content packages.

  1. Confirm your edition and entitlement. Sign into the account used to buy Microsoft Flight Simulator and make sure it includes PC access.
  2. Check the available storage. Leave extra capacity for mandatory updates, temporary installation files, rolling cache and later add-ons.
  3. Connect the charger. Select the laptop's performance power mode and avoid attempting a large installation on battery power.
  4. Install the launcher. Use the Microsoft Store, Xbox app or Steam, according to where the PC licence is held. For the older release, follow our Windows installation sequence for MSFS 2020.
  5. Choose the package location carefully. Where the installer offers a content location, select an SSD with enough long-term capacity rather than concentrating only on the launcher's small download size.
  6. Complete the first launch. Keep the laptop awake, plugged in and connected until the required packages and updates have finished.

Both releases may consume more storage after world updates, aircraft packages and add-ons are installed. A mechanical hard drive can work in some MSFS 2020 configurations, but our explanation of how HDD and SSD installations differ shows why an SSD is the better laptop choice.

Why does Microsoft Flight Simulator run badly on some laptops?

Poor laptop performance usually comes from integrated graphics, battery-saving limits, overheating, insufficient memory or settings that exceed the GPU's capacity.

  1. Force the dedicated GPU. Use Windows graphics settings or the GPU manufacturer's control application to ensure MSFS is not running on the processor's integrated graphics.
  2. Run on mains power. Many laptops sharply restrict CPU and GPU performance while operating on battery.
  3. Start with conservative settings. Reduce render scaling, terrain detail, object detail and AI traffic before lowering every visual option at once.
  4. Check cooling. Keep vents clear and use the machine on a hard surface. Falling performance after several minutes often points to heat or power limits.
  5. Close memory-heavy applications. Browsers, recording tools and background launchers can leave a 16 GB system short of usable memory.
  6. Update the graphics driver. Driver faults can cause crashes, corrupted visuals or unexpectedly poor frame rates.

Streaming does not compensate for weak hardware. MSFS 2024 can retrieve more world content over the internet, but the laptop still has to render the aircraft, cockpit, weather and scenery locally.

Can a MacBook or Chromebook run Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Neither Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 nor 2024 has a native macOS or ChromeOS laptop installation. An Intel-based Mac running Windows may work only if its hardware and drivers meet the normal PC requirements; Apple silicon Macs should not be bought with the expectation of a supported local MSFS installation.

Cloud streaming may provide access on otherwise incompatible devices where an eligible service, region and subscription are available. That is a streamed session rather than downloading and running Microsoft Flight Simulator on the laptop itself, and image quality and control response depend heavily on the connection.
