What are the best free ATC add-ons for MSFS 2024?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Compare the best free ATC add-ons for MSFS 2024: VATSIM, IVAO and built-in ATC, with setup advice and PC, Xbox and PS5 limits.

The best free ATC option for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PC is VATSIM through the vPilot client, offering live human controllers and realistic phraseology. IVAO is the best alternative network. Offline and console pilots can use MSFS 2024’s included ATC, but it is less capable and is not technically an add-on.

Which free MSFS 2024 ATC option should I choose?

Choose VATSIM for maximum realism, IVAO as an alternative online community, or built-in ATC when you need unattended or console-compatible control. VATSIM and IVAO are networks accessed through free pilot clients rather than conventional packages placed in the Community folder.

VATSIM: best overall free ATC

VATSIM is our first recommendation when the aim is realistic communication with human controllers. Its free vPilot client connects MSFS 2024 to the network, carries voice communications and displays other connected aircraft.

The trade-off is that controllers are volunteers. A major airport may have full delivery, ground, tower and radar coverage during an organised event, then no controller several hours later. Pilots are also expected to understand their aircraft, follow clearances and use broadly correct procedures.

Our free online ATC network compatibility guide explains the practical differences between networks and what is required before connecting.

IVAO: the strongest VATSIM alternative

IVAO offers the same basic proposition: human controllers, voice communications and network traffic at no charge. It can be the better choice where its regional division has more activity, training or local events than VATSIM.

Accounts, clients and traffic are separate between the two networks. Connect to only one at a time; running both clients does not increase coverage and can create conflicting traffic or radio audio.

Built-in ATC: best for consoles and casual flights

MSFS 2024’s standard ATC requires no separate client and remains the practical free choice for Xbox and PlayStation pilots. It also works when no human controller is covering the airport you want to use.

Expect limitations around terrain-aware vectoring, runway selection, altitude instructions and complex arrivals. Treat questionable instructions cautiously rather than descending into unsafe terrain or forcing an unstable approach.

Is there a free offline voice ATC add-on for MSFS 2024?

The practical zero-cost offline option is MSFS 2024’s built-in ATC. There is no established free offline voice package offering the depth of the main paid AI ATC applications.

Do not confuse traffic software with ATC. A free traffic injector or model-matching library can populate airports and improve aircraft models, but it does not issue clearances or provide controllers. Free trials and limited usage allowances also should not be treated as permanently free add-ons.

For the alternatives across several simulators, see our comparison of genuinely free ATC software. Pilots willing to consider paid AI or offline products can instead use our complete MSFS 2024 ATC add-on comparison.

Do free ATC add-ons work on Xbox and PlayStation?

VATSIM and IVAO pilot clients require a Windows PC and cannot be installed on Xbox Series X|S, PS5 or PS5 Pro. They are standalone applications that exchange simulator, radio and traffic data with MSFS 2024; console versions do not support that external-client arrangement.

Console pilots therefore need to use the simulator’s included ATC for a completely free solution. A phone or computer running an unrelated voice application cannot provide the simulator integration required by vPilot or IVAO’s client.

How do I set up free online ATC without conflicts?

The reliable setup uses one network client, one source of network traffic and no automated in-simulator radio assistance.

  1. Install the current pilot client on the PC. vPilot and IVAO’s client are standalone applications; do not copy them into the MSFS Community folder.
  2. Configure your microphone and push-to-talk key. Test both input and output devices inside the client, especially if Windows has changed the default audio device.
  3. Add compatible model matching if required. This controls how network aircraft appear. The model library can remain installed, but do not run its separate traffic injector alongside network traffic.
  4. Disable duplicate simulator traffic. Turn off MSFS live traffic, AI traffic and multiplayer aircraft while connected to the ATC network. Live weather can remain enabled.
  5. Disable automated radio assistance. AI radio communication or copilot assistance can retune frequencies and answer instructions without your input.
  6. Match the filed callsign. The callsign entered in the client must match the flight plan submitted to the network.
  7. Connect while parked. Start at a stand or parking position, listen before transmitting and never appear on an occupied runway.

Why is the ATC client or network traffic not working?

  • The simulator is not detected: launch MSFS 2024 before connecting, update the pilot client and allow it through the Windows firewall. Installing vPilot in the Community folder will not fix this.
  • No controllers appear: this usually means nobody is staffing that area. Network coverage is not generated automatically.
  • Aircraft are generic or invisible: install and configure a compatible model-matching library. This is a visual problem, not an ATC connection failure.
  • Aircraft appear twice: switch off the simulator’s own live, AI and multiplayer traffic, and stop any separate traffic injector.
  • Frequencies change by themselves: disable AI radio or copilot communication assistance in MSFS 2024.
  • You can hear controllers but cannot transmit: recheck the client’s microphone selection, push-to-talk assignment and radio frequency. Windows may be using a different recording device.

The mistake we see most often is combining every traffic and ATC tool at once. Keep one ATC source active, use its own network traffic, and add only a model library for visual matching.
