Why is FlyByWire free in Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Ian Stephens
In short

Why is FlyByWire free? Learn how its volunteer-built, open-source MSFS aircraft work, what costs nothing, and the PC-only limitation.

FlyByWire is free because the A32NX and A380X are community-developed, open-source aircraft for Microsoft Flight Simulator, built largely by volunteers rather than sold as commercial products. There is no aircraft purchase price: users can download the project at no charge, while its licence governs how the code may be used and redistributed.

Why can FlyByWire give away such detailed aircraft?

FlyByWire uses a community development model instead of funding the project through individual aircraft sales. Contributors work on systems, flight modelling, displays, documentation and testing, with the source code available for inspection and collaborative improvement.

The A32NX began as an effort to improve the simulator's A320neo and grew into a substantially deeper aircraft with custom systems. The A380X is another free, open-source FlyByWire project. Their zero purchase price reflects how they are developed, not the number of simulated systems.

Is FlyByWire really free, or is there a catch?

The FlyByWire aircraft are genuinely free, without a time-limited trial or feature-locked paid edition. Several related costs and restrictions still apply:

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator is required: the aircraft add-on does not include MSFS itself. You need access to a compatible PC edition of the simulator.
  • The installer-based packages are for PC: Xbox and PlayStation users cannot install them through a PC-style Community folder. Free does not mean the aircraft is a console entitlement.
  • Optional services may cost money: third-party charts, updated navigation data or other external services can require subscriptions, but they are not a purchase requirement for the aircraft.
  • Development is ongoing: free community software does not promise a fixed release timetable or the same support arrangement as commercial payware.

Our A32NX package details and freeware download explain what is included before installation.

Does free mean public domain?

No. Freeware, open-source software and public-domain material are different things.

TermWhat it means hereWhat it does not mean
Free of chargeNo aircraft purchase priceThe base simulator and optional services are also free
Open sourceCode can be studied, modified and redistributed under its licenceThere are no licence conditions
Public domainCopyright restrictions have been relinquished or expiredA label that automatically applies to FlyByWire content

The A32NX's GPL licensing permits substantial reuse, but distributors must follow its conditions. Artwork, branding, liveries and other assets can also carry separate rights. A common mistake is assuming that a free download may be repackaged or sold without checking those terms.

Does free mean lower quality than payware?

No; price alone says little about simulation depth. FlyByWire includes detailed Airbus-style systems and continues to change as contributors improve or replace components, although unfinished features and regressions can appear.

For ordinary flying, choose the Stable release. Development builds provide newer changes but carry a greater risk of faults; our Stable-versus-Development breakdown explains which channel suits each type of user.

How should I install the free FlyByWire aircraft?

Use the supported installer workflow and keep only one copy of each aircraft package. Follow the dedicated MSFS 2020 installation steps or the separate MSFS 2024 installation steps, depending on your simulator.

A mistake we see constantly is leaving an old manual installation beside an installer-managed version. Duplicate packages in the Community folder can cause missing cockpit displays, conflicting systems or an aircraft that fails to load; remove the obsolete copy rather than installing another release over it.
