Chicago and the Lake Michigan shore

Chicago’s dense metropolitan core, its Lake Michigan waterfront and the broad spread of northern Illinois define this sheet. Coverage reaches well beyond the city into flatter suburban and agricultural country to the west, while extending north across the Wisconsin state line and east over the lake. The contrast is pronounced: a continuous urban landscape and major transport corridors beside open water, giving way to the level plains of the interior. At roughly 78 nautical miles across, the chart holds the central city and much of its wider metropolitan setting on one specialised sheet.

Related FAA coverage

The same area also appears on the relevant Sectional Aeronautical Chart and Terminal Area Chart. The sectional places Chicago within a broader regional picture, including more of the surrounding Midwest. The terminal chart provides a closer treatment of the busy metropolitan aviation environment. This Helicopter Route Chart has the most specialised role of the three, presenting the Chicago area specifically for rotary-wing flying rather than serving as a general regional or terminal-area sheet.

Common questions

What area does the Chicago Helicopter Route Chart cover?

It spans 41.6°N to 42.4°N and 88.8°W to 87.1°W. Airports on the sheet fall within Illinois and Indiana. The full list of public-use airports within its coverage is on this page.

Should I download the GeoTIFF or the PDF?

Take the GeoTIFF if you are loading the chart into moving-map software or a flight planner — it is georeferenced, so the software can place it correctly on a map, and it ships with a world file and FGDC metadata at 300 dpi (29.6 MB). Take the PDF to print it or read it on a second screen (58.5 MB); it is the same chart without georeferencing.

Is this the current Chicago chart?

This is the FAA edition effective 9 July 2026, which is superseded on 3 September 2026. Visual charts are reissued every 56 days and we publish each new edition on the day it takes effect. It is for flight simulation and reference only — not for real-world navigation.

Is the Chicago Helicopter Route Chart free to download?

Yes, with no account required. FAA charts are United States Government works and are not subject to copyright protection in the US under 17 U.S.C. § 105. Guest downloads are speed-capped, so a sheet this size takes a while; PRO members download at full line speed and can take the whole family as one archive.
