New York’s urban and coastal core

New York Harbour, Manhattan’s river-lined setting and the lower Hudson form the centre of this sheet. Coverage extends across north-eastern New Jersey, western Long Island and Long Island Sound, reaching into south-western Connecticut and the wooded uplands north and west of the city.

The result is a compact but varied flying area: dense urban development gives way quickly to tidal waterways, Atlantic coastline, suburban corridors and rising inland terrain. Major geographic references include the Hudson River, the harbour complex, the western end of Long Island Sound and the ridges towards the Delaware Water Gap.

How it fits with other New York charts

This Helicopter Route Chart is the specialised metropolitan view, concentrating on the geographic setting relevant to helicopter routes around New York. The Terminal Area Chart covers the same busy region with broader terminal-area context, while the Sectional Aeronautical Chart places it within a much larger portion of the north-eastern United States. Used together, the three products move from regional overview to metropolitan detail and then to the helicopter-specific depiction.

Common questions

What area does the New York Helicopter Route Chart cover?

It spans 40.4°N to 41.3°N and 75.0°W to 73.3°W. Airports on the sheet fall within New Jersey and New York. The full list of public-use airports within its coverage is on this page.

Should I download the GeoTIFF or the PDF?

Take the GeoTIFF if you are loading the chart into moving-map software or a flight planner — it is georeferenced, so the software can place it correctly on a map, and it ships with a world file and FGDC metadata at 300 dpi (32.4 MB). Take the PDF to print it or read it on a second screen (66.2 MB); it is the same chart without georeferencing.

Is this the current New York chart?

This is the FAA edition effective 9 July 2026, which is superseded on 3 September 2026. Visual charts are reissued every 56 days and we publish each new edition on the day it takes effect. It is for flight simulation and reference only — not for real-world navigation.

Is the New York Helicopter Route Chart free to download?

Yes, with no account required. FAA charts are United States Government works and are not subject to copyright protection in the US under 17 U.S.C. § 105. Guest downloads are speed-capped, so a sheet this size takes a while; PRO members download at full line speed and can take the whole family as one archive.
