The AA 7E7-8 DreamlinerThe AA 7E7-8 Dreamliner

Description
The 7E7-8 Dreamliner and 7E7-9 airplanes will carry 217-257 passengers in tri-class configurations on routes of 8,500 and 8,300 nautical miles ( 15,700 and 15,400 kilometers) respectively. A third 7E7 family member, the 7E7-3 Dreamliner, will accommodate nearly 289 passengers in a two-class configuration and be optimized for routes of 3,500 nautical miles (6,500 km). In addition to bringing big-jet ranges to mid-size airplanes, the 7E7 will provide airlines with unmatched fuel efficiency, resulting in exceptional environmental performance. The airplane will use 20 percent less fuel for comparable missions than any other wide-body airplane. It will also travel at speeds similar to today's fastest wide bodies, Mach 0.85. Airlines will enjoy 40- to 60-percent more cargo revenue capacity.

DOUGLAS WORLD CRUISERSDOUGLAS WORLD CRUISERS

Description
DOUGLAS WORLD CRUISERS HISTORY In early 1924, several countries got into an informal contest to see who could first travel around the world by air. In the U.S., General Billy Mitchel was a foremost proponent of this. Other countries included Great Britain, Portugal, Italy and Argentina. Later, the Italian aviator Francesco de Pinedo also flew his Savoia-Marchetti seaplane over vast distances. Four Douglas DT-2 torpedo bombers (among the largest single-engine planes of the time) were converted with extra fuel tanks, dual controls, primitive RDF (which never made the trip) and interchangeable floats/wheels. They left their home at Santa Monica, California, and flew to Seattle, the official departure point from which they left at 0847 hours April 6, 1924. The four planes were named Seattle No.1, Chicago No.2, Boston No.3 and New Orleans No.4. Army advance camps set up along the route included Seattle, Seward, Attu, Kagoshima, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Saigon, Rangoon, Calcutta, Karachi, Bagdad, Vienna, Paris, London, Reykjavik, Ivigtut, Hawkes Bay, Pictou, Boston, New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Santa Monica, San Francisco and back to Seattle. The full list contains nearly 60 stopovers, some essentially for fuel and minor servicing, others for complete overhauls. Though the planes had much greater range, a typical leg was perhaps 500 miles. The Seattle crashed early on, near Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The three others continued, albeit with plenty of engine changes, patches and other adventures. For instance, when they landed in Bangkok, Siam, they spruced up in borrowed whites for a special dinner with the King of Siam. Rickshaws picked them up, but instead of being taken directly to the palace, they were first taken to a brothel (the King figuring "first things first..."). Another adventure: In Calcutta, the six actually became seven: An AP news correspondent named Linton Wells talked his way aboard for the trip. He traveled with them, cramped in the rear cockpit, until Karachi, by which time the brass in Washington cabled their displeasure. (Some accounts say he hid aboard at first; the most definitive source suggests otherwise.) The Boston ditched in the North Atlantic. Being towed to port by a destroyer, it had to be cut free in bad weather and sank. The Chicago and New Orleans made the entire trip, met by an honorary Boston II on arrival to the U.S. When the three arrived back in Santa Monica, well-wishers covered the entire landing field in roses. The Douglas World Cruisers traveled a total of 26,445 miles, a flying time of 371 hours 11 minutes, an average of 71.2 mph.
