Delta Requests D.O.T. waiver for new KJFK tarmac delay rules

Posted on Fri, 12 Mar 2010 00:00:00 GMT
Delta 767Delta airlines has asked the DOT to waive the new 3 hour limit on tarmac delays at JFK. Originally JetBlue sent a request for a waiver last week, due to the fact that one of the airports busiest runways will be closed for construction for months. JetBlue's original waiver was only intended to be for itself, however Delta sent their request in saying that it would cause unnecessary customer inconvenience by forcing cancellation of flight that could have flown.

The new rules, to go into affect April 29, requires all domestic flights to give passengers the option to get off the plane if they are stuck on the tarmac for 3 or more hours. Delta and JetBlue have requested waivers until construction is finished, or December 1st, whichever is earlier. They have both said they will inform passengers before hand if delays are likely, and will ensure that there are ample supplies of food and beverages, and sanitary lavatories.
